castaway Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 I have a friend who swapped a MG50 wiffle spool out in his 100b SF reel to make it lighter in weight. From people he has talked to , the MG50 and the 100 series are basically the same ? Could it be possible to install the Heg 7:1 gears in a MG50?I was told that they redesigned the reels with aluminum sideplates to prevent the HEG system from binding up with the higher gear ratios, would it work properly in a MG50, or isn't it possible to change the gears out ? :-?Ivan Quote
Guest DavidGreen Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 I have a friend who swapped a MG50 wiffle spool out in his 100b SF reel to make it lighter in weight. Why? CH50MG 5.9oz., CH100B 9.0oz....I can guarantee that the spool in the 100BSF wasn't the weight.. The extra pinion support bearing and the longer SF pinion gear, and body size was.The A7075 Aluminum Spool fits both Chronarch reels. But they didn't make a HEG 7.1:1 gearing for the Chronarch. From people he has talked to , the MG50 and the 100 series are basically the same ? Could it be possible to install the Heg 7:1 gears in a MG50? The only ones that I know of with HEG is the Citica, Curado, Calais..With the Curado the only one with the 7.1:1 gearing. Remember that HEG consists of not only the gears, but also the frame, setplate, and handle-side sideplate. Just my .02¢ Quote
Super User Raul Posted November 25, 2006 Super User Posted November 25, 2006 The exact overal weight "saving" between the original 100 spool and the ChMg spool was 6 grams or 0.28 oz, so from 8.5 ounces ( Curado 100B weight ) it went down to 8.22 oz......not much for to make it lighter in weight. :-? Will it cast better ? yes it will, but not from the weight "reduction"; but from what RM mentioned, also, those low mass drilled spools require less force to break the inertia and start & maintain the rotation of the spool. castaway Posted November 25, 2006 Author Posted November 25, 2006 Thanks for the replies.I thought the same thing about the weight difference. Not worth the money he paid for the spool, like $47.50 + shipping, but he is my friend that I fish with alot, so I will let him go about his winter project without objection.I knew the side plates were beefed up on the new HEG system, I just didn't know if it was necessary to be ? Raul, Thank you for the lure answers.I absolutely love the finish on the lures I got so far, They are really nice baits. It amazes me, I can get the lures 2 days after he emailed me saying he sent them from Japan.Ivan Quote
