Super User Swamp Girl Posted November 30, 2023 Super User Posted November 30, 2023 Rain is my favorite time to fish. If it's going to rain all morning, I'll have a hard time falling asleep the night before due to excitement. Tie on a Whopper Plopper or buzzbait and hang on! Plus, it's beautiful in the rain. So many people hide from rain that they have no clue how gorgeous the grays and blues can be. 1 Quote

There is an obvious noticeable difference in the amount of boats on the water in the summer time here when its raining, or even just cloudy out. And 95% of those missing during those conditions are recreational watercraft. There are usually still a couple of anglers out though. These are the guys that think like I do: far less boaters and far better fishing. You wouldn't believe the complaining that goes on here when we get a rainy day on a Saturday or Sunday in the summer time. Its full pitchforks. Even in an extreme drought. Quote

Derek1 Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 A light rain in the summer. Is usually a good fishing day. From November on it’s usually to cold here, and the fishing is not good while raining. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted December 2, 2023 Super User Posted December 2, 2023 A rainy day during the summer months means it's time to fish a buzzbait. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted December 2, 2023 Global Moderator Posted December 2, 2023 I fished in the pouring rain today, probably ruined several pieces of gear/tackle. I just can’t help it 1 Quote
Pogues2300 Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 I tend to pedal my kayak towards the launch after so much rain….. that being said my best day numbers wise was in a light steady rain this year. Biggest bass was in a clear blue sky in October in Minnesota so yeah… who knows Quote
frenchy Posted December 8, 2023 Posted December 8, 2023 Rain/Storms in the spring with the low pressure it brings is the trigger for the bigger fish to turn on, if I'm on the lake when they are in forecast I want to make note of available docks to get into if I can't get back to the dock where I am staying, Any severe storms in forecast definitely watch the sky and radar and always stay near enough to get back safely as the storms can pop up quick. 1 Quote
swhit140 Posted December 8, 2023 Posted December 8, 2023 I don't mind fishing in the rain, sometimes everybody leaves and then you have the lake to yourself. I'll fish in the rain anytime there isn't a monsoon condition or tornadic winds/lightning. 2 Quote
Stratocat_Joe Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 I don't mind fishing in the rain. Unfortunately, the compartments in my boat aren't water-tight and I end up having to pull everything out and air dry it in my garage for several days afterwards, which is a pain. I've seen some of the Pro's Garage/Man Cave videos and they usually have an industrial type fan mounted above where the boat is parked, I surmise for this very reason. I just try to make do with a box fan. Now, if I hear a rumble or see a flash of lightning in the distance, I'm heading to the dock. There isn't a fish out there that is worth it to me to take that chance. Quote
GetFishorDieTryin Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 I love fishing in rain. It's almost as good at weeding out the goobers as the winter cold. Some of the best fishing you're ever going to have will occur when you're getting rained on in terms of numbers and size. Those bigger educated fish that seem to be one step ahead at all times let their guard down and push shallow to feed. The caveat being it can't be a steady driving or torrential rain, the bite will shut off real fast as the water muddies, light to moderate rain is what you want. One thing that will helps is buying a set of quality rain gear. Youre still going to get wet eventually if it rains all day, but you have a few hours even in less ideal conditions. 1 Quote

Last month, after using my old Gore-Tex jacket for 40 years, I bought a new, albeit used, Gore-Tex jacket and pants for $35 on Ebay. What a deal! And they both look new. In 2024, if it's going to rain, I'm going fishing. Skipping a rainy morning is like passing on a slot machine with a 110% return on your money. 1 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted December 10, 2023 Super User Posted December 10, 2023 I don't mind throwing on a rain coat for a light rain but detest my gear getting rained on steady. I'll simply pick a dryer day, overcast preferable. 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted December 10, 2023 Super User Posted December 10, 2023 As long as there's no lighting I'm good. Jon boat vs lighting, wanna guess who won? 1 Quote

Super User Swamp Girl Posted December 10, 2023 Super User Posted December 10, 2023 @Catt: Heartbreaking. I was in a tent that was sorta hit by lightning. It melted the tent's guylines. 1 Quote
Woody B Posted December 10, 2023 Posted December 10, 2023 I don't mess with lightening. When I was a kid I loved to play outside. My parents would have to threated to whip me to get me to come inside when a storm came up. One evening they set me down and gave me a lecture about how dangerous lightening was. THE NEXT DAY my best friend from kindergarten, along with his Grandfather and his dog were struck and killed by lightening. I'm still deciding on going today or not. Update, I'm going. It rained so much the day I caught my biggest Bass of the year that my automatic life jacket deployed. I've got an extra re arm kit so I'm ready for that now. LOL 1 Quote
