I run straight braid. I prefer the way it handles. I can’t do the leader thing. I’ve given it many opportunities and it’s just too much of a hassle when lose a lure and have to tie on another leader. Seems like a waste of time.

Same here. No matter how you slice it, it’s a failure point added in. I do use a leader when Mojo/splitshotting, but behind a swivel. I also will use a piece of mono or fluorocarbon for my “drop” below the hook on a dropshot rig (I pretty much exclusively use “Spinshot” or “Swivelshot” hooks).

What do you straight braid guys do when you need to break off and you've got 50 lb line on? I am constantly in trees and rocks and this is one reason I've moved away from it, I hate cutting it with scissors and leaving line in water, and can't figure out how to break it otherwise. I guess my knots are pretty good 😂

That was my thought as well. Without a leader you break something or cut your line. I can't stand to see braid in the water where it's been cut.

2 days ago I was fishing a ned and got hung up on a deadfall. It broke off at the leader on my spinning setup below the braid. Fishing the same setup later I didn't realize the deadfall snag had damaged the braid just above the leader. I made a cast and the lure and leader and small section of braid at the damaged area went sailing out into the water. Even on spinning gear braid is becoming a PITA.

I don’t think I’ve ever been in a situation where I absolutely had to break it off. (Granted, I don’t run any braid over 30lb, and I’m down to 8lb braid on the spinning rigs).  Usually I go chase the snag, deal with it and move on.

A telescopic lure retriever and a “hound dog” have pretty much eliminated intentional breakoffs for me.

You wrap it around a wood dowel and either get your lure back  or break a hook or pull in a dead body. Either way you lose a lot less stuff.

I dislike braid on baitcasters, so i only have it on 1 rig that i use for frog / pike fishing. 2 spin rigs get 12# braid - d/s and senko/fluke rod. Trilene xl on my other 9 set-ups. Hate floro and never tried co-poly.

I don’t have a lure retriever, I guess I should get one.

So you never fish deep water?

In all of my braid applications, I am either fishing shallow pitching with a baitcaster or dragging baits with spinning.  Pitching I can normally almost reach the bait with the rod and dragging, I can get on top of the bait which is normally in 5-15ft and either break it at the bait or straighten the hook.  I don’t use any braid other than 35 and 50lb test depending on the application.  Never have needed or rigged a leader.

Pretty much spend all summer in 40-80 feet. Occasionally shear off a dropshot or football head, but never intentionally.

Bank fisherman. Lots of wood and rocks where I fish.

There’s a lot of different versions out there - I like the hound dog just because I’ve had it for 20 or so years. Let it slide down the line and knock your bait loose.

The telescopic ones are best for above the water snags - I had a $2.99 Goodwill golf ball retriever for ever before I got a Dotline.

Believe me, Roosevelt Lake is called “the jungle” for a reason. Hangups are a constant event. Hell, you haven’t lived until you reel in part of a cactus.

Here’s a pic representative of the first 30’ of depth (turtle is a bonus).
