FivePoundBluegill Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 What are some of the stranger lures you have seen. Every lure I own has been from sporting goods stores or stores like walmart so I have not seen many strange lures. However just now I typed in "fishing lures" on google and saw some very strange looking lures that I have no clue how they catch fish or what kind of fish you catch with them. Many of these lures were very expensive some over $20. Heres some pics.... This is some kind of frog lure... It cost $22. Im baffled by who would buy this and am wondering wether it actually catches fish. Quote
FivePoundBluegill Posted August 24, 2007 Author Posted August 24, 2007 This is by far the strangest one and it cost $39. here is the description. This rare and unique collectible fishing lure was commissioned by Smith Ltd. of Japan in 2003 and is part of the Mad Scientist Lure Club series of fishing lures. There were only 500 total that were produced. The lure is in the original packging which includes a certificate with the signature of the artisan and product # out of 500. The packaging also states that Nishioka Kobo and the design and engineering firm of PHICS were involved. The lures are in new condition with original packaging and certificate. Weight: about .7 oz Length about 3 inches Action: Topwater floater Color: Red Looks like a mad scientist designed the lure... Quote

Super User T-rig Posted August 24, 2007 Super User Posted August 24, 2007 The Megabass Type-X Frog definately will catch fish. I have a few myself. The other's I have seen before but are to "strange" even for me! I'm sure under the right conditions they will catch fish but they are more of collectors items. Here a few "strange" lures that will catch fish: Megabass Gatta-X Quote

That is the Megabass Type X Frog lure, and it is not only a beautiful lure with brilliant colors (many more than the ones in your pic) but it really works. I have one of every color except cracked sand and viper red. (I will have those soon) The lure is a top water crank. You can twitch it like a rapala or fish it subsurface like a wake bait. The lure will also sort of 'dance' backward once you twitch it. You can pull it forward a little, and it will back up a few inches. I nail them with this frog come top water time... BTW, you can find them at better prices than 22 bucks. I've gotten them for as low as 8 bucks by being patient and shopping around. There are also knock-offs on ebay, and I have those too, but they are not any good. Quote
fireandice Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Great thread guys, keep 'em coming. I haven't seen any of these baits before. It's nice to know that you could find some stuff that not too many fish have seen even on fairly pressured water. I am a sucker for the old standby's but I could definitely see how some of these baits would work well. If I find any of my own, I'll post as well. The only unique bait that I throw is a 3/8 jig with a sort of chatterbait blade added to it. Not much different than all of the new chatterbaits, but it falls a little faster and has a tighter wobble if you swim it. Quote
Guest btlva Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Interesting thread, that red "mad scientist" lure is really wacky. It's funny how we can think a lure looks weird until it starts catching fish. If you ask me a buzzbait is about the ugliest, most un-fishy looking contraption you could possibly tie on your line, but they catch fish like nobody's business! Quote
FivePoundBluegill Posted August 24, 2007 Author Posted August 24, 2007 OMG look at these I just found. I wonder if a fish has EVER been caught with them. Yes I know they are a joke but I found them funny. Quote

Super User Redlinerobert Posted August 25, 2007 Super User Posted August 25, 2007 My favorite oddball lure is the Gatta X. I have several of them but would never use them. They are very cool looking. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted August 25, 2007 Super User Posted August 25, 2007 these two are BY FAR the strangest two ive seen: Quote
Ky_Lake_Dude Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 When they opened up a bunch of 200-900 acre lakes around here in the 70s my granddad and his fishing buddy would get out in the creek channels of the lakes and troll these and wear the bass out. they are like are backwards crankbaits. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted August 26, 2007 Super User Posted August 26, 2007 yea thats made by bomber, i forget the model but its supposed to imitate a crawfish...that color doesnt do such a good job at it though : Quote
