Hey,

So a couple years ago I purchased the scorpion BFS out of Japan. The reel is pretty nice and the drag clicker is a nice touch. What is happening now is I am basically regretting that I purchased it in 6.3 ratio instead of 8.2 lol. Do you guys know of anywhere I can get gear replacements for 8.2 ratio or should I just live with it/sell it for the XG model? I was looking at prices these days and some people are trying to sell this reel for insane prices...not sure why. Any input would be great thanks

I have the opposite going on. I have the Curado BFS 8.x:1, the Conquest BFS XG and Aldebaran BFS XG. All fast reels. I am usually fishing various small cranks and jerkbaits. A slower gear ratio for me would be more ideal for the small cranks I throw.

Sometimes, I fall asleep at the wheel and crank too quickly causing the bait to almost turn over.  If it was me, I would hold on to it.

I don't know about the BFS, but I CAN say I bought a Curado DC in the 8 speed and started kind of wishing I would have gotten a 6 spd.

Brian (reel tech) at the original Tackle Trap location ordered me a main gear and pinion set for a 6spd so I could swap them out as desired. It wasn't very expensive. I think it was like $30-40.

Mike at DVT could probably order them too.

Now that I think about it,... Scorpion is probably JDM, but maybe a USDM model gear set would fit it.

Check out the slx bfs, Asian Protal and JapanTackle both have it in 8.2 in stock, essentially the same reel as the scorpion with the only difference being cosmetics, bearing count and type:  SLX bfs - 5+1 s-arb (sealed) bearings, Scorpion bfs - 7+1 a-rb (non sealed) bearings.

The SLX/Curado BFS gears should drop in since all 3 are the same platform.  You can order them right from Shimano.

And just so I know, which gears would I need to replace to convert to 8.2 ratio? The main gear and..? Pinion gear?  you think I should get the gear set from the slx or curado, do you think one is higher quality over the other or are they similar quality? Thanks

I've had one sitting in my cart for a few weeks. $165 is tempting. I'm torn between it and a Roro spool for my TW80.

They are the same.  You will need both the main and pinion gear.

The other choice is a 60- to 65-mm handle.

While none are made specific for Shimano, can use a spacer shim that converts Dauwa/Abu handle to Shimano.

What about the crescent shaped plastic piece the pinion gear is cradled in, do I also need to replace that or should it fit in the existing piece? Thanks

The pinion yoke is the same across all models.  The one you have will work.

Funny, I had that debate myself between the slx and one of those AliEx spools for my tw80 before getting it. In the end it was the 6oz total reel weight that made me choose it.
