Which is preferred and why?  Front drag or Rear drag   :-/

Posted

Personally, I would never buy a spinning reel with a rear drag. I cant really tell you the why of it, maybe it's because I have always used front drag reels. I just know I feel more comfortable with the drag on the front.

Front drags work when the spool is twisted on the axle.

In rear drag reels, the spool has to help twist the axle, and then that twist is transferred to the rear drag pads. It takes more torque to turn the spool and axle in the rear of the reel than to turn just the spool. Meaning the front drag reels are more accurately set then a rear drag reel, and smother working.
