buying blade baits

Ok have a question if i buy blade baits off of ebay that hasn't been painted.. can i paint them and sell them for a profit

there's a guy i know he has people make his plastic lures has his name on it

I never had painted blade baits that I thought were better than chrome, but I don't know why you couldn't.   If they don't have great hooks, you may end up wanting to upgrade them if you want repeat customers...but then profitability might be difficult

Kinda like Ace Frehley said when he was doing on how to play shock me start off with standard strings then higher gage... Bass pro or cabelas would have better hooks thanks choporoz

I would buy the bodies from Barlowe's, some split rings, and Siwash open eye hooks and offer something different than what most are offering.  The single Siwash hooks fish well but doesn't snag on the bottom or tangle as much as two trebles.

There are so many blade baits available in the tackle marketplace at competitive pricing that you would have to offer some killer paint jobs to make your product stand out.

Sure you can but a chrome blade is all I use.

When i get done painting them how do i dry them... after i put clear coat on it

Just hang them. If you find a good clearcoat for metal that is easy to use and durble/let me know. You can also powder aint them with a owder paint gun.

Depends on the paint.  If it's a water based paint, then typically a hair dryer will dry it quicker.  If it's an oil based paint, then a black light (or any high UV light) and air circulation will dry it quicker.  But dry it too quickly, and you'll have adhesion problems. 

However, drying isn't the concern.  It's curing.  And all paints take about 3-4 weeks minimum to cure.  So while it might be dry to the touch, enough to handle without smearing the paint, the paint will still scratch and chip easily for the first month or more.

 

Hence why a lot of people like powder coating.  Once it's cooled down from the oven, it's good to go!

I was told by a guy at michaels to use acrylic paint.. i have a old Cuisinart toaster oven can i use that

With the number on the market it would be tough!  I gave up my molds years ago and finally got them back and make my own now.  You can powder paint by tapping the paint on with a brush or use testor's paint then a two part epoxy over the top.

If you are using acrylic you will need to clear over it, otherwise it will peal right off.

I know bill at michales told me that and use rustoleum clear coat

You better step back and add up your cost that includes taxes and shipping, your time isn’t free. Hobbies like this can be costly. Total up your cost and multiply by 1.75 for a selling price.

I checked around at Barlow’s for blank blade bodies and they didn’t with lead attached.

When I bought my blanks a few years ago it cost me over $120 for 400 blanks. The only place I've seen molded ones for sale is ebay or once in a while Lure parts online.  If you're going to powder coat or paint them you'll want the brass blanks to do those they hold the paint better.  The chrome based blades are better for putting tape on.
