Super User Jig Man Posted October 29, 2023 Super User Posted October 29, 2023 I switched to it last spring. It has out performed any other main line to leader knot that I have ever used. It is getting close to the applications where I use those setups. I have 12# fluorocarbon tied to 15# braid. They haven’t been used since spring. I’m thinking they all should be redone. Do you guys retie them after that much time or just keep going? Quote
garroyo130 Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 So I almost started to type out that I would retie it, but then realized that when facing a similar situation, I didn't. For context, mine was braid to YZH, garage kept for probably 7 months or so. I'd say you should be fine unless you spot anything that makes you believe retying is necessary. Quote
JN94 Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 I would retie personally. I prob wouldn't let a knot run for any longer than a few months, and even less so if I'd been fishing with it 1 Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted October 30, 2023 Super User Posted October 30, 2023 I'd give up knot strength slightly and drop down a size or two main line and leader size line for a smaller size knot - just to have a knot easier and faster to tie than the FG knot ! Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted October 30, 2023 Super User Posted October 30, 2023 I guess I'm a little persnickety as I re-tie all my leaders before every trip. 33 minutes ago, ChrisD46 said: just to have a knot easier and faster to tie than the FG knot ! If I need to replace a leader on the water - I go with the Alberto knot...easy, quick, fairly small, and it hasn't failed me yet. 1 Quote

I fish three times a week and average about 8 rods with leaders every time out. I pretty much only re-tie leaders when they get too short. Some can last months of regular fishing. 2 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted October 30, 2023 Author Super User Posted October 30, 2023 I thought this would be all over the place. Thanks for the responses. Quote
Zcoker Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 There's an old sayin in the foodservice business....when in doubt, throw it out! I say the same thing for knots....when in doubt, re-tie! 1 Quote
Super User LrgmouthShad Posted October 30, 2023 Super User Posted October 30, 2023 When I used FGs, I would retie them every single fishing trip or as needed during Coo-coo Quote
newapti5 Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 I would retie it. Since I started using FG knot several years ago, it has only failed me a few times. Some of them were just human mistakes, and the others were knots from the last season. So nowadays I always retie after several months. Quote
waymont Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 You're asking about taking 1 minute to retie a knot? YES! Quote

PaulVE64 Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 It's important to find a knot that you can reliably tie. Quote
