thediscochef Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 I got impatient and used the wrong tool, bent the pin taking it out. I have the tool on order. I should have just waited, this is gonna be a time consuming (or possibly expensive or both) lesson. So this ends in a new spool, right? If I can even get one... Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted October 29, 2023 Super User Posted October 29, 2023 Depending on the brand - different places sell spool pins...find the schematic for your reel and search by the part-number if it's separate from the spool. Example - Tackle Trap sells pins that fit most Daiwa spools for $4 https://tackletrap.com/products/daiwa-spool-pin-g03-4101-or-j25-2301?_pos=1&_sid=fb68a95b9&_ss=r 3 Quote
thediscochef Posted October 29, 2023 Author Posted October 29, 2023 So the pin still fits into the pinion just fine, the reel went back together just fine. It runs way smoother after cleaning and greasing. No more pepper grinding. I just worry that I've compromised the structural integrity of the pin at this point - it would be a shame if the pin broke during a fight. Then again, unless I have the drag cranked (never) I think I will be fine. I emailed lews either way but hopefully this is bullet dodged and I can get out of this on the cheap. The pin puller tool I ordered will be here Monday, the rest of my reels will wait for cleaning until then. I threw my fit, created some new swears, threw my hat. Back on that horse though. Nothing stops this train. Nothing except the lack of spool pin puller tool lol Everything else went pretty smoothly, I think the spool pin thing is the hardest part of the whole deep clean process. That and the one spool bearing on my tournament pro that has a press fit shield instead of a clipped one...that bearing will get replaced before I run it unshielded as it's the bearing on the spool itself. I blew it out the best I could with lectramotive and did the same for the palm side, then added oil. Will replace spool bearings on the next deep clean. 2 Quote
Super User Solution bulldog1935 Posted October 29, 2023 Super User Solution Posted October 29, 2023 There are two types of pin removal tools, depending on how hollow the spool, and whether the spool bearing sits far out on the spindle, or deeper in the spool hollow. The pins themselves may be shouldered to only move one way, and forcing the other way destroys the spool/spindle. Check both ends of the pin with magnifier or calipers. Rorolure.com sells both pin removal tool types for the best prices. Lew's SP requires the spendy SLP Works offset module vise, which Roro sells equivalent for the best price on our planet. 1 Quote

Rorolure.com sells both pin removal tool types for the best prices. There's a few different tools out there, I tried to make sure the one I got would work in the spool hollow. It's a lews tournament XP, that particular spool bearing isn't inset much and the pin is fair easy to get to. I'm more worried about the spools I don't know as well. My impatient *** tried using a pair of channellocks with the mouth offset to where it would push the narrow end of the pin down without blocking the larger exit, YouTube "trick" that should be launched into the sun. I knew it was risky and I think I got lucky, the pin reseated and the reel works fine. Never again though 1 Quote

Super User bulldog1935 Posted October 30, 2023 Super User Posted October 30, 2023 Just a note, the Hedgehog-copy tool (not the only tool you will ever need) will work on this spool. The bearing is outside the spool flange. But only the SLP Works or Roro-version offset module vise will work on any of these spools. The pins on these spools all sit too low for the flat pin press to reach them. Note the bearings are in the spool hollow. Here's both tool types on Roro website - cheap postage. https://rorolure.com/collections/spool-bearing-remover 1 Quote
