Gr8wall Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 Hello all. just discovered somethign pretty fun....flipping lol. I guess i will need a new out fit for this seeing as all the other rods and reels i have dont match up to it (story of my life). So...can anyone recommend me some brands, combos, or anythign for this outfit. Im trying not to break the bank on this one (hopefully less than 100), but i know you get what you pay for so if it is necessary to shell out the extra cash i guess im willing to (unless this type of thing is always over 100). Thanks for all that has looked and replied. Quote
Super User Alpster Posted November 17, 2006 Super User Posted November 17, 2006 For less than a $100 you can get yourself a ABU 5000 series reel for $50 or so at walmart and almost any 7' (or longer if you can find it) med. heavy or heavy power rod with a moderate action will get the job done. I used to flip and pitch with a Quantum Tournament grade TGC70MH (about $35 at walmart) and a ABU 6000 reel ($60 at walmart) and I caught a lot of fish with that set up. Very reliable and strong set up. I upgraded to a G Loomis custom IMX flippin stick and a Shimano Calais and retired the old rig to catfishing and it still works great. Hope this helps. Ronnie Quote
Super User flechero Posted November 17, 2006 Super User Posted November 17, 2006 Alpster gave good suggestions. Let me add to the mix just to give you another option... I am partial to the 4600 Abu's just because they are a little smaller (and still hold plenty of line) as fo rods, I think one of the best deals is an All Star Classic, in the carolina rig model... it's a 7' heavy- fast but it has a pretty soft tip and isn't too fast, which makes it a nice flippin' rod for under $50 and it has an exposed blank reel seat. I think it's everyday price is $49.95 but Academy has them on sale for much less about every other month. So if you catch the rod on sale, you can get out for under $100 and have a really nice outfit. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted November 18, 2006 Super User Posted November 18, 2006 Abu also sells a reel at Wal Mart that is a low profile model (1003lp) and is about $48 bucks. Its a solid reel and the low profile reels in my opinion are more comfortable than a round reel for all day flippin'. As for flippin' rods,I suggest a heavy action,7'6"......and I'd agree with flech or Ronnie either one,the Quantums or the All Star Classics will do just fine. Quote
Guest DavidGreen Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 If you are going to dedicate the system to flipping, and are truly flipping and not pitching. I would recommend a rod in the 7'10" range, Heavy power, and Fast tip action. Looking at a line rating of 12 - 30lb test, with a lure rating of 1/2 - 2oz., I would also try and keep the rods weight down to the 7oz. mark. As for the reel, if again you are truly flipping and not pitching, then any quality LP reel with a dedicated flipping switch, trying to keep the combo weight in at a pound. Tight Lines!!! Quote
Gr8wall Posted November 18, 2006 Author Posted November 18, 2006 thanks for all the recommendations. reel mech, whats the difference between flipping and pitching then? thanks Quote
Super User 5bass Posted November 18, 2006 Super User Posted November 18, 2006 Pitching you are reeling the bait in after each cast Flipping you are just working the line, not the reel Quote
jdw174 Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 Just my opinion, but the absolute best bang for the buck out there is the Team Daiwa Denny Brauer model rod. Rather than having the action of a pool cue as so many of the flippin' rods do, it is rated for 1/4 to 1 1/2oz lures and has a bit of tip action making it great for both the flipping and pitching styles. If you can't handle the longer rods, try going with a 7' rod from any of the good makers. AllStar used to make one called a WR2 that should work fairly well. I use a Falcon Lowrider "Carolina Lizard Dragger" that also does the job. Any good decent reel will do the job. No need to go overboard here. I spool mine with 25lb SST line. Quote

Guest the_muddy_man Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 This is what you need for flippin. first off figure out if your right handed or left. Take the dominant hand make a fist in front of you and extend a finger OHOH did it again thats not what this is about is it Quote
Super User cart7t Posted November 19, 2006 Super User Posted November 19, 2006 You can pick up a nice, nearly new Garcia LP reel, either a 3003 or 3004 Torno or a 2005LP for around $30-40 on ebay. Match that with a BPS Extreme flippin stick, currently on sale for $70 bucks and you've got a nice combo for around $100. Quote
