My all time favorite horror film is the original Exorcist.  12 some odd years ago, (I sound like Grandpa Simpson...) my oldest daughter, (now 33) and her then boyfriend, came over to watch my DVD of the Exorcist one Halloween.  They had watched all of the current "horror" films of the current day. They said, "how could a movie made in the early 70's be scary?"   They both spent a good deal of the movie, watching through their spread fingers, covering their faces.  When Regan's head spun around, she got up from the couch and said, "I'm done".  I protested.  "Nope. you win, I'm done".  The scariest, realest movie ever made.

I’m not into horror movies at all now, but Halloween 1 was My favorite back in the day.

I dont remember the name of it, but the one with the scarecrow in the cornfield was pretty good. The scarecrow was the ghost of a man that was killed but was innocent. He comes back to kill ( in various ways on their farms) the men that killed him.

Dark Night of the Scarecrow.  I agree, that was a good one back in the day.

You guys sure do like the old school Halloween movies. I haven’t even heard of half the responses here.

Thought the Texas Chainsaw Massacre was decent considering that it was slightly based on a true story.

Although I have yet to see it due to my wife not liking horror films my daughter and her friend watched “Hereditary” which came out in 2018. I watched the trailer and it definitely looks twisted. I’ll get a chance to watch it in a few weeks when the wife goes out with friends for the evening.

Also a vote for an oldie but goodie is American Werewolf In London. Great mixture of humor and scare. My dad was a horror film fan which is why I enjoy them also.

you guys, (if you can handle subtitles)  need to know that no one does horror as good as japan and korea. if you're interested, here are some titles to check out:

be advised that hollywood remade many of these, and ruined them, so  don't compare them if you saw the western versions of some of these

from japan -

audition: if this movie doesn't scare you, there's something wrong with you. DO  see it.  remember that i warned you of the noise "ki-diki-diki-diki-diki-deeeeeee..." it's going to become the new scariest noise you ever heard a woman make, for the rest of your life.

battle royale: only japan could think of something like this.

suicide club:  if you like gore films,  the opening scene will be the new pinnacle for you.  you won't forget it.

from korea -

old boy: this movie is freaky, you're not going to guess the end.

a tale of two sisters:  my personal all-time favorite.  this movie would make hitchcock lose his composure.  i had to watch it 3 times before i understood everything i saw.

the quiet family: not really scary, but holy smokes i thought it was hilarious. not just the premise, but some of the stuff that happens is comedy gold.

the mimic - based on a korean folk tale.  this movie is really good.

train to busan - classic zombie film, but on a train.

rampant - also a zombie flick , but set in 1600's josean (what korea was before it was korea)

Speaking of messed up Korean flicks...I love I Saw the Devil. Its a horror crime movie and its absolutely brutal and visceral. But much like a car wreck I'm mesmerized and can't look away. If you have a strong constitution I highly recommend it.

As a horror film lover, especially all things zombie, this immediately came to mind when you mentioned Japanese and Korean films.

A lot of movies were based on Ed Gein. I just wonder why the movie wasn't called The Wisconsin Chainsaw Massacre.
