I bought a shimano 100dsv citica again this one has a clip at the end of the spool shaft..does this serve a purpose other then holding the spool in when open it ?? TIA

Yes the purpose of it is to keep the spool from falling out when adjusting centrifugal brakes. It’s actually in the handle side plate and the spool shaft has a groove in which it sits.

It’s also a spacer for the spool bearing. You need to keep it in place.

Hows a spring clip a spacer? it has 2 plastic spacers  already outside the bearing all it does is stop the spool from falling out i assumed ..spool moves in and out and has bearings for 360 non movement other then rotation

I was referring to the assembly as a whole. Technically, yes you can lose the clip (bnt2024) and use the reel.
