As I was driving back from a meeting I saw something in the road up ahead. As I got closer I saw that it was a dog that had been hit by a car, but his tail was wagging straight up in the air like a cry for help. As I slowed down he looked into my eyes and naturally I turned around, called 911, and ran to him in the road.

As I got there his tail stopped wagging and he passed away. I hope he realized that someone was coming to help.

What amazed my is that before I stopped I saw 5 cars drive right by that dog without even slowing down. I can't imagine doing that, nor can I imagine hitting a dog and not stopping. There truly are monsters in the world. I hope there's a special place in hell for people like that.

This is going to stay with me for quite some time, especially since I pass this spot every day on the way to work.

I’m sure it was sad to experience, but your compassion is inspiring — thank you for sharing.

Do you think it was actually someone’s pet @Koz? Was it wearing a collar? Or was it a stray dog?

I was with my Father once years ago when he hit a dog on a 2 lane freeway. The road was under construction and it ran across traffic in front of us. It was wall to wall cars right before Memorial Day going both directions and the road was very busy. I think the dog had escaped its owners and it was dragging a leash. We saw a couple people looking shortly thereafter and pulled over to explain to them what had happened. It was a sad moment for those dog owners but they understood it was a pure accident on a busy road.

I live on a very low key quiet residential street but I always keep my own dog in the yard. She is not allowed in the road without a leash.

@Koz. I’m sorry. I’ d like to think he saw you were coming to his aid. There is a place for those people and, there is a place for you too. It will be way better than the place they are going.

thanks for trying.

Some states have laws on the books that require the operator of a vehicle that collides with a domestic dog to stop.

As for other drivers not stopping,

not everyone has a first responder mentality.

Besides not having ANY training in any aspect of what's happening here, what could they do ?

What were you going to do ?

Then there's the clear & present danger of just being out of your vehicle on the side of a busy roadway.

Crazies run over and KILL police & emergency workers (who have wild flashing lights going) all the time.

Some folks might not want to assume the risk, other might not even see the unfortunate animal on the road in the first place.

A call to authorities/animal control, is often the best course of action,

along with keeping dogs on leashes when not in our home.

Stay Safe.

It had a collar and a tag. The dog was well groomed an manicured. I almost looked at the tag to see if it was just a rabies tag or contained owner ID, but that call would have been hard for me to make because losing a pet is like losing a member of the family. I did communicate with the police that the dog had a collar and a tag.

I've had a dog most of my life and my current dog is a senior dog. Thankfully, he's in great shape and still runs and plays. He's also a "velcro dog" who just loves to hang out with me and follow me everywhere (he loves the new house and the dock) and I already know it will be really hard when he passes.

You're right - there is a huge risk. Maybe even a stupid risk.

But I can't just walk away from someone in trouble. The 911 operator asked me if I could move the dog to the side of the road, but I told her that was too dangerous and that I needed a deputy to assist.

If the dog had not been moving I would have just called it in. But that tail was wagging straight up in the air like a beacon calling for help and as I drove up slowly the dog looked right at me even though he could not lift his head.

So while there was nothing I could have done to try and save the dog other than calling for help, I felt the need to try and comfort that dog that was obviously asking for help.

I fully understand the instinct to help injured animals. It's a tough call no doubt. You must weigh your safety, anybody in your vehicle, and other driver's safety with the traffic conditions at the moment. I had a friend go through rabies shots, almost lose a finger, and undergo surgery to repair tendons or ligaments about 15 years ago trying to help a hurt dog in the road that bit him.

I chased down a little Shiba Inu that was literally wandering in traffic one Friday in Alexandria, looking confused. Grabbed it by the scruff and scooped it over to the side of the road and got one of my dog’s leashes on it. It was biting me the whole time but old enough that it didn’t break the skin. My wife just looked at me and goes - ‘well that was stupid’ and she was right.

i'm glad there are people like you in this world.  last spring, my dogs got out of the yard (again)  but this time, were out of earshot before i knew it.  one of them was returned by animal control  in a couple hours.  the other wandered  a few blocks up the road, tried to cross the hiway, and was hit by a car.  she ran off, and miraculously,  was somehow unhurt.  she ended up wandering onto a construction site nearby, and couldn't figure out how to get back out of there.  someone called animal control, i got her back safe the next day.  sure am glad they are chipped.  anyhow,  im glad you were trying to do something

Last week my cat got out and the next morning I found her next to the carport with blood all over her and her front leg had a big open wound. The X-ray showed that someone had shot her. That’s the last thing I expected. She was wearing a pink collar and it’s clear she belongs to someone who loves her. Looks like she’s going to make it, but they had to amputate her leg.
