Super User Mobasser Posted October 11, 2023 Super User Posted October 11, 2023 Every time we go to Wal Mart, regardless of what we went there for, I always make a walk through the fishing tackle area. My wife will say, " really"? But, I can't help it. I have to check it out. Mostly, it's the same old stuff. I might buy something, or, most times not. But I always want to take a look. Ive done this for a long time. Luckily, I have a wife who is understanding of this, and will spend a few minutes looking at stuff with me. I'm sure I'm not the only one who does this. When you go to Wal Mart, do you like to take a walk through the tackle area? 10 Quote
Super User LrgmouthShad Posted October 11, 2023 Super User Posted October 11, 2023 Yes pretty much every single time. Last time I went there was a hard bait that I really like that I hadn’t seen there before, so I picked it up. Can’t remember what it was though 2 Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted October 11, 2023 Super User Posted October 11, 2023 I don't often go to walmart, but yes. Since they have the shelf price points they want to hit, they will often have reduced size packs of things cheaper than buying a whole pack. FGreat for trying a new plastic for instance. I picked up some robo worms and a pack of senkos last trip through. Their terminal tackle can be on sale at times too when they want to make space for other things coming in. I think they stock gamakatsu hooks depending on the store so never know what they'll be clearing. 1 Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted October 11, 2023 Super User Posted October 11, 2023 Yes, I always walk through the fishing tackle area when I go to Walmart. I’m very happily married and one reason why is we don’t go to Walmart together. 😆 8 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted October 11, 2023 Super User Posted October 11, 2023 No I don’t. I can’t remember the last time I did. I don’t even find what I want at Bass Pro. I spent 20 worthless minutes looking for a specific item that they were supposed to have. I find it so much more convenient and easier to get what I want on line. 2 Quote
greentrout Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 Yes ... can, on occasion, find some good lures in the dollar box and discontinued box. 2 Quote
Super User king fisher Posted October 11, 2023 Super User Posted October 11, 2023 If a store has a single hook, I will take a look. My local Walmart in PV only has kids Zebco combo's with rod, reel, bobbers, hooks, and split shot all wrapped on a piece of cardboard. No other rods, or tackle. I still stop by and take a look every time I go there. One of these day's I just might need a snoopy rod combo, and I know just where to look. 3 1 1 Quote
Solution Pat Brown Posted October 11, 2023 Solution Posted October 11, 2023 @king fisher catching a Mexican DD on a snoopy pole sounds like a noble pursuit that I fully endorse. 😂😂😂 I love the Walmart fishing section. Where else would I buy my Berkley mean green 15 lb?!?!? 1 5 Quote
Super User LrgmouthShad Posted October 11, 2023 Super User Posted October 11, 2023 More than Walmart, I like going into local tackle stores because very often they will introduce me to a new regional bait that I like. Walmart and Academy I will check on for a few items, and otherwise I’m online 1 Quote
you Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 28 minutes ago, Mobasser said: I always make a walk through the fishing tackle area. Same. I wouldn't suggest buying any rods, reels or line there. Wally world carries a lot of low-QC products (e.g. Ugly Stik "lite pro" rods, which appear to be made from rejected "elite" series blanks). Not a good investment. I will buy terminal tackle and lures there. Senkos, gulps, zooms--they might be a bit old, but they still work fine. That said, I try to get everything from locally-owned tackle shops first (there is only one in town, sad times). At walmart, it's usually impulse buys that get me. 4 Quote
Eric 26 Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 I look every time I go and I usually buy at least one Strike King finesse swim jig even though I have as many as I already need. Last 2 times in I bought some Ned rig setups made from Perfection lures/David Dudley. 3 Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 11, 2023 Super User Posted October 11, 2023 Wally World, Academy, Bowie Outfitters, name doesn't matter. It's my unwinding time 😉 7 Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted October 11, 2023 Author Super User Posted October 11, 2023 The Wal Mart north of me in Cameron Mo, has Lews and ABU casting reels, Diawa and Shimano spinning reels, lots of stick baits and Zoom baits, hooks, weights, lines and a few decent rods. Most are lower or mid grade. But, for a novice, they could get set up with some decent gear to get started. I've probably bought 100 bags of culprit worms over the years up there. 2 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted October 11, 2023 Global Moderator Posted October 11, 2023 I always get jigheads zoom flukes and zoom finesse worms in there. Love eagle claw jig heads 8 Quote
greentrout Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 Walmart's Ozark Trail lures ain't all bad. The two dollars frog is a good one. 5 Quote
Skunkmaster-k Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 When my wife goes to town for groceries , I tag along . When we finally get done at Food King and get to Walmart the first thing she says when we’re walking to the door is “ I’ll come by sporting goods when I’m done.” The latest purchase was a couple of 6’ ML Lews combos for 55$ apiece. They feel like they’re worth more than that, a good deal in my opinion. If I saw them on the internet I would have assumed they were trash for that price. 4 Quote

Kirtley Howe Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 My local Walmart has a pretty good selection of basic stuff, and a few better rods and reels. They often have some lures and rods on clearance....but they are NOT in the Fishing aisles. They are in the clearance section near the front of the store. In my local store that is located near the garden supply area, and before you get to paint and hardware. I always check out that aisle first. 3 Quote
Fishing_Rod Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 Greetings All, Wally World is one of a few retailers of fishing gear in our small community. Otherwise the options are shopping on line or traveling to the regional metro area which is over an hour away, 90 miles. So yes, it is nice to browse for general angling tackle. Our local store has a modest selection which covers the basics for many different species and angling approaches. Over the years I have tried out several of the Wal Mart brand products, Ozark Trail, with reasonably good performance and good value too. Several of the lures which are similar to the major brand offerings. I do appreciate having lower cost alternatives because I am just a recreational angler so I'm not shopping for products at a high performance level. It is nice to try something without breaking the bank and it also doesn't hurt so much when the line breaks too. I have also found their other products such as the reels and rods to also provide good performance at a comfortable price point. After several years of diligent use I've not had a major issue or failure. i'm still using many of the products on a regular basis. Wally World, Wal Mart, has been helpful to me throughout the decades in many ways. Many of my community members are employed by Wal Mart so there is consideration for that too. It is important as a smaller community to have access to this kind of resource. Yup, I do frequent the angling section, not regularly, but often. Be well and Cheers! 7 Quote

In fact, every rod and reel that I own was purchased there. As far as my other tackle it’s 50/50 between Wally World and the local B&T. 2 Quote
WVU-SCPA Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 I still take a gander every time, before it got popular my local stores always had maxscent items below the going price($4), I would buy them out every time they restocked. The last 3 years I haven't saw it under $7.98 there. 1 Quote
MAN Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 I find it amazing when I go visit small towns throughout the country that Walmart is really the only alternative for most folks for groceries, household items, tackle etc.. and its a norm for ALL town folk to say they are going to Walmart. Where I live...there are too many alternatives and its almost always a last resort type situation to visit one and have to deal with the riff-raff. But to answer the question....when I visit as a last resort I stop by the tackle section. 1 Quote
Super User Log Catcher Posted October 11, 2023 Super User Posted October 11, 2023 I go through the fishing section on most trips to Wal Mart. That is where I first bought Mepps Spinners after several threads on here about them. Have caught several fish with them so I guess it pays to hit the fishing section. 1 Quote
volzfan59 Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 I'm the exact same way, no matter the reason I go to Walmart I go to the fishing department especially if it's one I've never been to. They surprise me sometimes. Picked up a bunch of Slobberknockers this spring. 3 Quote
Super User gim Posted October 12, 2023 Super User Posted October 12, 2023 I personally don't care for Walmart. Mostly because of the clientele that shops there, the Walmartians. I did however find a killer deal on some stickbaits earlier this spring in the bargain bin. If I remember correctly they were 59 cents each. I bought one bag, posted it on here, and asked if they were any good. I received some good reviews from posters here, and went back and bought 5 more. 2 1 Quote
