txchaser Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 So for whatever reason the craws at a couple of lakes I fish at stay red in the summer. It's really more like a maroon than a red, and SK's Falcon Craw is a decent match (at least the red part of it) but it also has flake. I caught one at the ramp today, 5" long, thick, smallish craws for its size, and maroon. I had a hunch they would be keyed on them since this craws were moving around in shallow water even though the sun was out. Jig, bubba shot with t-mac, and a mojo rig were the winning presentations, with the bubba shot being the best. Netbait's GP/red with flake (Kentucky Special) and SK Falcon Craw worked well today, and they were super picky. But I can't find this color in solids (craws and worm) or in a GP/maroon laminate with no flake. The color of the craws is similar to red bug from netbait but with no flake. And good luck in hardbaits. Rapala DT has one maroon color that is pretty good. Almost everyone else has a bunch of bright red or orange on the belly. Am I overthinking this and just use whatever, are these local craws just weird, or something else entirely? Please send help. 2 Quote
papajoe222 Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 I ordered some custom painted cranks from a guy on that auction site. Sent him a pic of our local summer craws and he did a fantastic job reproducing them. Got one each for shallow square bill, and knock offs of LittleJon and some Normans. The pricing was on par with store bought cranks and they do produce. I just pick one that will run deeper than the bottom depth I'm fishing, reel it down until it's bouncing bottom and slow crawl it along the bottom. Had him make up some bluegill ones too. 3 Quote
RRocket Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 I see this color in Japanese baits. It's called "Scuppernong" and there's a variety of craw and worm in this color. Quite a popular color. 2 1 Quote

I was seeing the same crawdads on stocks of primrose when I was punching mats a decided to catch one so I could try an “match the hatch”. I later discovered this particular crawdad is a red swamp crawfish. 4 Quote

For the hardbaits, just pick the ones that match what you want but have the bright belly. Then apply sharpie liberally. 1 Quote

Pat Brown Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 Cinnamon purple flake twin tail grub on the back of a 1/4 oz PBJ brush jig has gotten me broken off in a tree by something very large in early January! 😂 Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 25, 2023 Super User Posted October 25, 2023 Just noticed a pork rind on the market Picasso JDM Pork Rind trailer. The red color on the chart looks very similar to reddish brown color (crusty crawdad) and the 3 1/2” is very similar shape to my custom Super Pork. The problem is price $17 for 2....yikes! Anyway this color works good👍. Tom 1 Quote
KP Duty Posted October 26, 2023 Posted October 26, 2023 Red is deadly. Been fishing red baits long before I knew about craws turning red. When I hit the fishing forums in '01, I read that red traps were big in Texas. Then I discovered the spinnerbait with the flo red colorado 'kicker' blade, which were hard to find (now every company makes one). You definitely should add one of those spinners if you don't already have one. 2 Quote
greentrout Posted October 26, 2023 Posted October 26, 2023 I fish a lot of rip rap with a lot of craws hanging out. Use the above (Bama Craw) 5" stick bait. 1 Quote

txchaser Posted October 27, 2023 Author Posted October 27, 2023 This is a special distributor color and not currently an active Zoom stock color. Zoom is unable to provide specific information as to the availability in your area. Contact your local tackle store or distributor for more information. Great color. Dang, new quest though. 1 Quote

Super User Munkin Posted October 30, 2023 Super User Posted October 30, 2023 Just have someone custom pour you some. The crayfish in one of my local fisheries were a color I could not find in commercial baits. Had some made in the color I needed, and they worked great. Allen Quote

I'm guessing that's where I'll end up. Probably won't make much difference but I'll feel better about it. Quote
