CrazedL.IFisherman Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 I truely am sorry if this is too general and cannot be answered but my question is as followed, what guys are your favorite mono line for all general fishing in the 10 to 14 pound range, the line that would work overall for all situations and different types of fishing for the good ole large mouth, i need to get a light line in that range on a decent baitcaster. Want to start with mono and then move to braid when im comfortable with the b.c. Quote
NEBassMan Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 I use Trilene Big Game, but i'm going to try the Yo Zuri and Sufix Siege Quote
Super User Alpster Posted November 5, 2006 Super User Posted November 5, 2006 I love braid and have swithched nearly all my reels to braid. If you must use mono, I like the Trilene Big Game. I have tried nearly everything and I still think it behaves better than most and it's not very expensive. JMHO Ronnie Quote
floridabassboy Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 i use suffix seige and its my favorite mono but i wodnt start with mono when youwant to switch to braid just start with braid its easier Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 6, 2006 Super User Posted November 6, 2006 Monofilament: Maxima Although Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft is not a monofilament line, it is my preference and something I suggest that you try. I fish #6 (11.9 lb test) on spinning tackle and #12 (19.5) on baitcasting equipment. Quote
BucketmouthAngler13 Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Trilene XL not the XT version, that stuff is no good. The XL stuff is far better. Quote
Chug Bug Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 If you are trying to get comfortable with a baitcaster, start with braid. It is much easier to cast than mono. Quote
BASS fisherman Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 If you are trying to get comfortable with a baitcaster, start with braid. It is much easier to cast than mono. Sorry Chug Bug and floridabassboy but I highly disagree with you on this one. I was told the same thing and got some Sufix braid on my first BC. I had several times were I got so frustrated from backlashes. The line would dig into the spool, and I'd have to cut the line off because it was so tight and jammed up. I switched to mono and found it atleast 10x's easier to cast, and when it came to pulling out backlashes too. I still have yet to go back to braid due to the horrible experience I had with it before. Soon though, Im getting better. Sufix Siege is probably the best to start with IMO. Quote
Super User flechero Posted November 6, 2006 Super User Posted November 6, 2006 If you are sure you will switch, you may as well start with braid and shorten the overall curve. But in the interest of your question I copied this from a thread I replied to last week. Line (for me) depends on the cover you will be fishing... if real rocky or woody, I'd go with XT or Yo Zuri Hybrid but if you have just weeds or sparse cover, try the spiderwire xxx in the green box... but go one size heavier as it's under rated. Go by the diameter... the 17# xxx is the diameter of 12# XT. It's good line w/ low memory but it's not as tough around heavy cover. Lots of people here like XL or Big Game for a general purpose line. My partner uses Suffix in the red box and swear by it... I've only used it on spinning gear but am impressed with it there. Quote
Fishin49er Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Add my vote for Big Game. Good line and very reasonably priced. Quote
Hawgin Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 My vote would be for Suffix Elite or Suffix Siege. They are both outstanding lines. Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted November 6, 2006 Super User Posted November 6, 2006 I'VE USED TRILENE XL FOR OVER TWENTY YEARS WITH GREAT SUCCESS. I TRIED OTHER BRANDS BUT ALWAYS WENT BACK TO TRILENE XL. Quote
Banor Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 For pure mono required presentations I'm with RW. I am really impressed with Maxima. On a side note, their fluoro just didnt feel right to me. B Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 6, 2006 Super User Posted November 6, 2006 Last summer I was fishing the White River in crystal clear water with my guide, Tim "hot Dawg" Curtis. He asked me to give this line a try and spooled me up with some 4 lb test line. It has very low memory, almost matches the light refraction of flurocarbon and is very strong. I am planning to try some heavier line on a baitcaster to test higher diameters. I have been very impressed with the line after several outings, but it hasn't replaced my Yo-Zuri, at least not yet. Pa Angler Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 I like the Mccoy's Flo Blue it has low stretch and low memory also the clear is good as well. Chow Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted November 8, 2006 Super User Posted November 8, 2006 I fish 2 types of line, Trilene XL for mono, and spiderwire stealth for braid. I tired Yo-zuri hybrid ultra soft and really didn't like it. XL is cheap, reliable, easy to handle, and a great all purpose line. Never tried XT, I have tried sensation, and not really impressed with it to use it over XL. The higher price of flouro and my mistake experinace with it (vanish) has turned me off from trying it again. I have never lost a fish on XL that was not my own fault ( poor knot tied in haste, not retying when I should, drag not adjusted properly, or using too light a line in too heavy cover)I only use braid for jigs, frogs, c-rigs and heavy cover , mono for just about every thing else. I find the green XL is even less visable in clear water then the clear if thats a concern for you as well. Quote
basspro48 Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 Trilene Big Game and Stren Original are the only mono's I use anymore. They have low memory, low stretch, and good abrasion resistance compared to other monofilaments. Quote
rocknfish9001 Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 I have become a fan of triline sensation. And im sorry, but i wont use suffix elite again. I bought it because it was supposed to have zero memory, but i found quite the opposite. Its a very average line, nothing elite about it imop. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 8, 2006 Super User Posted November 8, 2006 After a couple of trips you won't be using Sensation either. Quote
RODBENDER Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 STREN ORIGINAL I use braid on my flippin stick and mono on everything else . Been around the world trying every different brand of mono out there and spent a bunch of dollars . Made it back to Stren Original and i'm staying . Just darn good mono . Quote
CyBasser Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 For the last four years I have been using Trilene XL in the clear blue color in 10lb, 12lb, and 14lb. This line has never betrayed me, not once. It is very smooth casting, quite visible above the water (ie helping on spotting line mov when using soft plastics) and, I must admit to my surprise, very resistant to abrasion. A large percentage of my fishing is in heavy cover situations (submerged bushes and trees, oftentimes amongst slab rocks) and the line takes a lot of beating. In one memorable occasion, I caught a 4lber within a thich bush, it took for ever to get it out of the branches. During the fight I was quite worried as I could feel the line going through the limps, but it held - though the 14lb line was quite frayed for more than 3 yards and looked more like 2lb line. I have switched to braid since last January, but on some occasions where I might still use mono I depend on XL. I have tried Yo-Zuri hybrid as well and it was OK, but my mainstay is still XL. Quote
Tucson Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 I like Yo-Zuri Ultrasoft on my baitcaster but for everything else I always come back to Stren original. Quote
GAMEOVER Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Yo-Zuri is more of a hybrid line then just a mono line I think. The best mono to me is a question to you all. What is the limpest while being the strongest mono line with the least amount of memory? As far as braid to start off baitcasting, even though im a braid diehard I dont recommend it for when your starting picking out over runs with braid is nearly impossible. Quote
