Ted Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 I have 2 Shimano Scorpion 1000's. One of them is worse but they both have "scraping" sound on retrieve. I have cleaned and lubed them but still they are noisy. I can't see any sign of the spools rubbing on the frame. Have any of you had this issue with these reels? Very frustrating. I may have to tear them apart completely and see if I can find out what is going on. Quote
castaway Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 The money you have invested in them, I would send them to the reel mechanic. He gives this site members a discount as well. My point is he is a trained Shimano repairman and will know what to look for and he most likely already has the schematic sheets and knows what the tolerences are to what the parts need to be at and probably already has the part numbers to get the correct part for you if your reels might need them. Also with being a Shimano brand , he most likely has had alot of experience with repairing the reel. P N J Quote
Guest DavidGreen Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 Ted, The Scorpion 1000 is a Japanese market reel. I don't service any JM reels.. The service for them in the US is rare. I would suggest you contact: 1. Reel Em In Mr. Dennis Radziewicz 7120 Hazelcrest Drive Racine, WI 53402 262-681-3818 Good luck. Tight Lines!!! Quote

castaway Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 Ted & Reel Tech., I am sorry, I wasn't aware that there was a difference in the Shimano reels sold here compared to the Japanese. It must be like the Abu Garcia 3500 CS ROCKET IAR reel I own, I bought it in Sweden and cannot buy parts for it in the US ?Abu said that it is only sold and distributed in South America. Its been a rock solid reel so far even though it has aluminum gears in it. :-[ Ivan Quote

I took them completely apart and the 2 bearings were rusted pretty bad. NOT the bearings for the spool but the one at the end of the drag shaft and the one where the gear rides that engages the spool. They are thinner than the spool bearings. I soaked them in lighter fluid and spun them many times and lubed them. I think they are scored from the rust but I haven't tried the reels out yet. Where could I get parts for these reels? Thanks Quote
Super User Raul Posted November 6, 2006 Super User Posted November 6, 2006 Regular Shimano Curado 100B bearings are compatible with Scorpion 1000 bearings so, you can order them to Shimano. Quote

Super User Raul Posted November 7, 2006 Super User Posted November 7, 2006 But if you are going to replace the bearings.........BOCA ceramics my man ! that will turn your Scorpions into a mean burgundy casting machine. Quote
Ted Posted November 9, 2006 Author Posted November 9, 2006 But if you are going to replace the bearings.........BOCA ceramics my man ! that will turn your Scorpions into a mean burgundy casting machine. Thanks for the tip. My question however, was regarding the 2 bearings housed on the handle-side of the reel. They are different then the spool's bearings. They are thinner. The small one is attached to the end of the handle/drag shaft and the other is a bit larger and surrounds the pinion throw-out gear. I hope that the Curado 100 is compatible. I have a Curado 100 and I am going to dismantle and sevice it soon. I will see then. Quote
Guest DavidGreen Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Ted, My question however, was regarding the 2 bearings housed on the handle-side of the reel. The 2 bearings you are referring to are BNT2143 (crankshaft support), and, BNT2170 (pinion support). Boca does not have a crossover for those two bearing packs. For ceramics you would have to remove them and measure the packs then goto their site and enter the dimensions to see if they even build a ceramic in them. I hope that the Curado 100 is compatible. I have a Curado 100 and I am going to dismantle and sevice it soon.It will depend on the year of the 100. The 93 100A doesn't have the support bearings you are seeking even the cast control bearing pack is a different number and not the BNT194.Tight Lines!!! Quote

Ted Posted November 12, 2006 Author Posted November 12, 2006 Ted,Direct from Shimano. Thanks again. I took my Curado 100B apart and cleaned/lubed it today. The bearings in question appear to match the Scorpions. Quote
Guest DavidGreen Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 Ted, Because I don't have a schematic for the Scorpion 1000. I am assuming it is built like the CU100B. If this is the case, one of the problems you might have is taking all of the parts off of the set plate (frame) to get to the pinion support bearing like on the CU100B.. This is not like taking the bearing retaining clips off and removing the bearings for cleaning and re-lube. It isn't accessible from the inside of the frame (were the spool sits). Meaning you will have to remove all of the trigger, yoke, return, and crank assemblies, and any connected springs. Just make sure you have the schematic for your Scorpion 1000 in front of you when you do the job... Good luck. Quote
