TNcreekfishing Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 So I just purchased a daiwa tatula 6’10 medium rod. I know it says medium but the lure rating is more along the lines of a medium light. I’m going to specifically use this setup for finesse fishing in small rivers and creeks for smallies. Ned rigs, Texas rig and other plastic presentations. That being said of course I need a new reel!! ? so I was wondering as I’m looking would a daiwa BG be too small of for this task? Would it be too small for the rod or should I go for something more like the daiwa fuego 2500xh? Especially since they’re on sale at scheels. Thanks for the input ? Quote
Eric 26 Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 My BG1500 is on a 6’-4” All Star drop shot rod and I absolutely love the pairing. I’m using the pairing for throwing 1/16th ounce jig heads with crappie tubes currently. 1 Quote
rgasr63 Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 I have a 6'10" rod. 3/8 oz is the heaviest recommended weight for it. Drop shot, ned rig,1/8 cranks, wacky rigs, rooster tails it will work excellent all day long. A 1500 size reel works good with it too. Texas rigs not so much. IMHO it is too light for it. A rod that has at least a 1/2 oz weight recommendation would be ok for light Texas rigs. If I am using a spinning rod for Texas rigs I prefer a MH rod. Quote
TNcreekfishing Posted September 25, 2023 Author Posted September 25, 2023 @rgasr63 Really?? That’s crazy to hear because I honestly would have never thought that a ML rated rod would be too light for Texas rigging. I will say though, that I’m not the most skilled, knowledgeable or experienced fisherman. I tend to be a little unorthodox sometimes. I say this because I have a 7’ light power rod that I use to do lightweight Texas rigs all the time and have been pretty successful. Little niko hellgramite with a 1/8 ounce tungsten bullet weight seems to slay the smallies. I do this a lot because the bodies of water I fish are literally snag city so exposed hooks are almost impossible to fish unless I wanna lose $20 in tackle every time I go out. So the light T rig and a skin hook have been a goto for me. I’ve actually seen this presentation used by Richard gene the fishing machine a couple times in his creek videos using a light rod and that’s what really kind of got me into the idea. Quote
rgasr63 Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 That is what I think of as a ultra lite bait. Texas rigs on my end are rage craws or rage bug, or a zoom worm ol'monster or trick worm. So it is just a difference of what we define as a Texas rig. 1 Quote
TNcreekfishing Posted September 25, 2023 Author Posted September 25, 2023 @rgasr63 ahhh ok, got ya. I see what you’re saying now. Thank you for the response. 1 Quote
mrpao Posted September 26, 2023 Posted September 26, 2023 Both the BG1500 and Fuego are decent reels. I would go with the Fuego because its lighter and on sale. The tatula 6'10" med is a pretty good rod and a light weight Fuego would pair up nicely with it. Or a cheaper alternative with be the Exceller. Its a pretty nice reel too. For your task at hand a 1000 to 2500 size would be plenty big enough. Most of my spinning reels are 1000 or 2000 shallow spools. Holds more than enough line for me. 1 Quote
TNcreekfishing Posted September 26, 2023 Author Posted September 26, 2023 @mrpao hey thanks a lot for the input! Yea i was looking at the exceller as well because I love the look of it and the weight but I honestly don’t hear as much about it as I do the fuego among the community. But it’s on sale right now too so I would be kind of torn.. people talk so much about the bg as well so you almost feel compelled because it’s so loved. I was leaning away from it though because of its weight and I know for what I’m trying to do, bottom contact, that the lightest gear possible is idea. Quote
Super User king fisher Posted September 26, 2023 Super User Posted September 26, 2023 If you think you may be using the reel in saltwater, get the BG. If you are only going to be fishing in fresh water, buy a similar priced lighter weight reel. Quote
