Super User LrgmouthShad Posted September 23, 2023 Super User Posted September 23, 2023 Let’s expand on @GoneFishingLTN’s rock thread and talk tackle. Do y’all have baits you prefer to use around rock? I rank crankbaits and jigs at the top but I am very partial to the jig Quote
Pat Brown Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 Buzzbait/chatterbait/spinnerbait/Jerkbait/swim jig/crankbait/football jig/Shakey head/tube/wobble head/wacky rig/fluke. I really like using Treble hooks when fishing around rocks because I can usually get away with it and the clearer water usually around rocks makes reaction baits work great. A lot of times due to pressure, I do better with bladed jigs/spinnerbaits/jigs/plastics in general but windy days can yield some wild bites on treble hook presentations. I love fishing rock in the early summer/post spawn and in the early pre spawn/late winter but any time of year can be dynamite around rock. 4 Quote

Super User WRB Posted September 23, 2023 Super User Posted September 23, 2023 Since it is very difficult to find any aquatic vegetation in our local lakes (fish it if you find it) you fish rocks or go home. Every soft plastic works finesse rigged. If it’s a bass lure give it a try and let the bass tell if they will strike or not. My favorites are jigs of all types, medium and deep diving crank baits, all types of surface lures including white frogs, big, medium, large swimbaits both hard and soft. Finesse drop shot, slip shot, nail weighted worms, Senko’s etc. Tom 6 Quote
Susky River Rat Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 I will probably be the only one that says this. Ned rigs. Do you get snagged? 100% will you get snagged often? Yes. It will produce and produce well. There is just something about getting down in those rocks. Now like most others will say spinners, tubes, jerks and cranks. They work good too. 2 Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted September 23, 2023 Super User Posted September 23, 2023 I truly enjoy scraping the bottom for rocks with a variety of lures including: Football Jig Carolina Rig Ned Poop baits Neko 3 Quote
Super User gim Posted September 23, 2023 Super User Posted September 23, 2023 Rocks means smallmouth territory to me. I am using jerk baits, tubes, and a Ned rig. 2 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted September 24, 2023 Super User Posted September 24, 2023 It depends on the size of the rocks I'm fishing around. Fishing around gravel I will probably be using a little bit of everything. Fishing around chunk rock like on a dam I will be using more weightless plastics, shallow running crankbaits, and spinnerbaits. Baits that will not get hung up so easily. 3 Quote
Super User king fisher Posted September 24, 2023 Super User Posted September 24, 2023 Crankbaits all of the time, Spinnerbaits if it is windy. 4 Quote
The Baron Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 Depends on the time of year, water depth and what the fish are in the mood for. Also depends on whether it's chunk rock or flat rock. But, football jigs, Dark Sleepers, tubes, shaky heads, Neds, crankbaits and dropshot are all on the list of possibilities for me. Of course jerkbaits and treble hooked topwater lures are always on the menu when I'm not fishing over thick weeds. 2 Quote
WVU-SCPA Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 A lot already mentioned above, but a little different method that has helped getting that bigger bite is fishing a over weight T-rig or shakey head in heavy rock. You will 100% get hung up and lose tackle, but getting the bait hung up and popping it free has constantly produced a better class of fish for me. If you do it long enough you can really build a feel for working the bait and when your going to get hung up. 2 Quote
papajoe222 Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 I view rocks and rip rap the same as I do apples and tomatoes. While I love jigs and tubes for fishing rock bottoms, I avoid them for rip rap. While my favorite for fishing either is a crankbait, when I want a slow presentation for rip rap, I break out my walleye sinkers to make a walking C-rig. A Rage tail craw on a short leader behind a needle weight produces when the bite is tough. 3 1 Quote
bp_fowler Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 Another vote for the football jig here. At least that’s gonna be my first choice. After that the shaky head/Neko rig, and mojo rig. 1 Quote
CM-fisher Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 I like a shakey head in the rocks 2 Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted September 25, 2023 Super User Posted September 25, 2023 6" Huddleston weedless because our rip rap gets fished to death, so I show them something different. 2 Quote

Functional Posted September 26, 2023 Posted September 26, 2023 I use a shaky head head but throw a 10"+ ribbon tail on it. Only adding in addition to whats been said above. 1 Quote
Skunkmaster-k Posted September 26, 2023 Posted September 26, 2023 A purple worm for isolated boulders and a crankbait for long stretches of rimp ramp . In the spring it’s a red squarebill , fall it’s a white one. Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted September 26, 2023 Super User Posted September 26, 2023 tex rig worm, crank bait. jig. okay..dropshot. Quote
Super User GetFishorDieTryin Posted September 26, 2023 Super User Posted September 26, 2023 Little to no rock locally, so when I get the chance I always take advantage of it and grind a swing head through. Quote
Fishlegs Posted September 26, 2023 Posted September 26, 2023 I can catch rocks with any lure. Nobody taught me how. It's just a natural skill I possess. ? 1 Quote
