Laredo Posted September 22, 2023 Posted September 22, 2023 I recently purchased a St. Croix Premier medium power fast action rod with the intention of using it as a general jerk bait, crank bait, and top water rod. Took it out to give it a whirl, and to my surprise it felt more like a MHF. I also have some Mojo Bass rods that feel great as far as their ratings. Anyone have any suggestions, experience, answers, etc? Quote
padlin Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 How do the specs match up between Mojo’s and the Premiers? I see the Premiers are SCII vs the MOJO with SCIII, I imagine that makes a difference. 1 Quote
JackstrawIII Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 I have a couple of those rods, both spinning and casting. I like the spinning rod version because it’s stouter than most and I use it for skipping wacky rigs and such. I use them often. I’m not crazy about the casting rod version. It’s a decent generalist type rod for lighter stuff, but doesn’t excel at much. I don’t use them much. 1 Quote

papajoe222 Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 St.Croix was known for under rating the power of their rods. That's changed, but then again, I believe the Premier and Mojo lines are not made at the same location and it very well may be the Premier line still holds to that earlier rating. Their action ratings are dead on, IMO, and unless you're not happy with the distance of your casts, I'd stick with that Premier, but I'd switch to a Mod/Fast action for your intended use. 1 Quote
Bass Rutten Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 I used to own the exact same rod, I still own and use the avid x. The premier is older blank technology that’s getting long in the tooth, it feels beefier and heavier in hand than newer rods of the same power, but in actual use I’ve found both the premier (and the avidx) to be spot on with its medium power rating. If you were to fish some jigs or Texas rigs with it to test its backbone I’m confident you’d come to the same conclusion. 1 Quote

Its hard to compare the Mojo to the Premier. SC used to have really consistent rating system throughout every line of rods, now they're all different. The Triumph and Premier blanks have soft tips where the Mojos are feel faster as a whole, as the mojo uses a higher quality graphite. Ive got an old pre IPC 7' M F premier I use every now on then for blues. Its rated 1/4-5/8 and its fairly accurate, Ive gotten away with pushing 3/4 of tin, but the rod feels like a stiff MH. If you compare that rod to the current 7' M Premier, you would see the only thing they share in common is the paint scheme. 1 Quote

Super User MickD Posted October 2, 2023 Super User Posted October 2, 2023 Learn to measure the CCS numbers of your rods and in time you will have a good understanding of what you have. With the use of CCS growing, you will find more fishermen who can provide numbers of their rods. There is also a growing data base of CCS numbers, mostly associated with builders, but some factory rods. Sometimes factory rods of St Croix can be correlated to blanks for which there are data. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1r3zv1ygtuUjPBa-c5LT9RTYeDR_pnCDIkVIdDv0YoeQ/edit#gid=1592691333 https://www.common-cents.info/ As has been mentioned before, subjective ratings even within one maker's rods, are notoriously misleading at times. And one never knows until he buys. Quote
