Foul-mouthedBass Posted September 21, 2023 Posted September 21, 2023 So I have a question about rods I have 3 bait casters that I've been playing around with and I've read a lot online about what to use for what but I want y'all's opinion on how I should use them or how you would use them . With that being said the rods I have and how I been using them . Slx 8:1 40lb braid to 12lb floro 6'8 mojo bass st Croix med heavy fast- jigs and weighted Texas rig. Slxdc 6:5 12lb floro 7'0 dobyns fury med heavy moderate fast- spinner baits ,crank baits, small swim baits and Bass pro qualifier 7:1 straight 40 lb. Braid 7'0 falcon sr bucca med heavy moderate fast -topwater mainly frogs walking baits. I'm also looking to add a rod and maybe eliminate one of these rods, most likely the falcon. I would also like to hear recommendations for rod with a budget of 200 bucks. I appreciate all feedback. Thanks Gee Quote
Fishingmickey Posted September 21, 2023 Posted September 21, 2023 All of your rods are MH, one fast action, two moderate. You can use them for whatever you want to tie on the end of the line. You'll see a recommended weight range on the rod. If the weight of the lure is much under that range it will be harder to cast that lure accurately and your distance will suffer because the rod won't load (bend) when you cast. If you go a lot over that rating bad things can happen like your rod breaking when you try a bomb cast with that 6 oz Hudddleston swim bait. You can push it some but I don't recommend trying to surf cast a 2 or 3 oz bait and sinker on a rod that is rated for 1 oz. Go out and let your wild inhibitions free, experiment, try different things. There are no rules just limitations. Find those limits for your rods and you'll be able to figure out what works well and what doesn't! Happy experimenting! FM Quote
Super User WRB Posted September 21, 2023 Super User Posted September 21, 2023 Welcome to BR. The Dobyns Fury is FR705CB crank bait rod and works for what you listed. Not sure what the reel shown Bass Pro Qualifier 7:1 40# braid applies to; Falcon MHMF for frogs and walking baits? I wouldn’t use this combo for the presentation or lures listed. You can use the FR705CB combo* for top water walking lures. A good frog rod and utility rod for the. Pro Qualifier reel is Irod IRG754F gen 3. Works for lures between 1/2 to 2 oz. Tom * a dab of Vaseline on your finger finger tips applied to about 3’ to 4’ on FC line keeps the line on the surface. 2 Quote
JackstrawIII Posted September 22, 2023 Posted September 22, 2023 You can do what you need with those rods, but since you asked for advice, I’d change a couple things: 1. I’d want a slightly longer rod for your jigs & t-rigs. Something like a 7’2 MH/F is what I’d want. 2. Setup 2 is great. 3. I’d want a fast action for topwater frogs/toads/etc. And a bit longer too. And a bit more power. So, maybe a 7’3 or 7’4 H/F. I use a 7’2 H/F and it’s almost perfect, but longer would be better. If I could only replace one of your setups, it would be #3. Then #1 as funds allowed. You seem to have a good understanding of gear and are on the right track. Take my advice for what it is, just my own opinion. 1 Quote
Super User Solution casts_by_fly Posted September 22, 2023 Super User Solution Posted September 22, 2023 So based on where you are and what you’re talking about, I don’t think you’re too far off where you need to be. PA doesn’t have the big heavy cover so much. A medium heavy covers most of what you want with a heavy thrown in here and there. id take rod #1 and make it your topwater rod. It’s a little shorter and perfect for walking baits or even buzzbaits. I’d probably leave it with the 8.5:1. I’d use 17 lb mono or similar but ymmv. Leave the fury for what you do with it, but put the pro qualifier on it. If you like braid for that then great. I prefer mid size mono like 16 supernatural, but you pick for you. The bucoo sr is also known as the trapcaster. It’s too light for a frog rod, but it’s a perfect crank bait rod. Put the slx dc on it with the 6.x:1 gear ratio. That’s a perfect setup for small to medium crank baits 1/4-1/2 oz. that leaves a hole in the heavy/fast department. Only having one, you’ll want it to cover frogs, heavier pitching, bigger bottom rigs, etc. Length is your preference if you like longer or shorter and which of those things is more important to you. Something around 7’-7’4” rated 3/8-1, maybe 3/8-1.5 depending on the maker and rod. With those four rods you’ll cover anything you normally will be fishing. It won’t cover big swim baits and it won’t cover finesse (you’ll need a spinning rod). But with that set you’ll catch a bunch of fish. 1 Quote
