Hello all, First post on Bass Resource, long time fisherman,

I have recently acquired a small fishing boat for free, and I thought what a better time to grab a couple of rods for the adventure. For the past 10 years, I have fished rivers out of a canoe so my rods reflect that style of fishing. (Shorter rods, medium/medium heavy). For my first installment, I am going to acquire two different rods that are bottom contact rods (t-rigs, jigs and jig heads w/ swimbaits). Ive been scouring the web and I am getting conflicting info about what rod is actually capable of....

Right now I have the following rods

Loomis IMX MBR 843c. This is an old rod. I used to use this rod for light t-rigs and light jigs. I loved it, but I am going to use this rod as a dedicated spinnerbait/buzzbait rod.

Loomis IMX PRO 842c. I use this rod for a light all-arounder. Jerkbaits, squarebills, etc.

So what I am looking is:

1 rod for light t-rigs/jigs under 1/2oz

1 rod for medium/heavy t-rigs/jigs over 1/2oz, occasionally used for c-rigging and heavy jighead with keitechs.

Cost doesnt really matter as I like to find used/deals. I enjoy rods around 7' with a max of 7'6". I am a huge loomis fan, but also have heard good things about Daiwa. I have one destroyer p5 and I like it and would like to see what the rest of the line-up is like.

Let me know what you think! Right now I am focusing on MB X-bites, NRX 873crr, NRX 853 & 4 JWR.

TIA

I'm a falcon guy so can make recommendations from that lineup.  I just did exactly those two things in your neck of the woods the last trip out.  Two texas rigs- one rod with a 1/4 oz  and a smaller bait and one with a 1/2 oz and a larger bait.  For me, the 7'2" Cara swim jig is a great lighter texas rig rod.  I throw it down to a 1/16 oz and up to 3/8.  It can do more, but if I'm fishing heavier then I want a heavier rod.  I run 30 lb braid on that rod as its also my swim jig rod.  For the bigger rod, the 7'4" Cara heavy cover jig is a great rod.  It fishes great with 3/8-3/4 oz of weight plus plastic.  This past trip that was 1/2 oz plus a regular rage bug or 10" worm.  I run 17 lb mono on that rod.  Both are great all around rods but they are definitely in the wheelhouse for what you're asking.

G. Loomis NRX+ 844C and the 873C CCR should cover just about everything.

Is the 873 overpowered for 1/4oz to 3/8oz weights plus plastics?

Actually, found a used FMJ last night and ordered it! Thanks!

Now looking for that Medium Heavy/Heavy to cover finesse and lighter t-rigs!

I don't think so. I have thrown an 1/8 oz weight with a lizard and up to 1/2oz  jig with a trailer. I would say it's sweet spot is around 1/2 oz. I would put it's power somewhere between the 843 and 844 MBR's.

The Dobyns DX744 is a nice rod for lighter t-rigs.  I fished my friends rod when we traded gear fir an hour. It’s fantastic!  He was using my X-bites.   He didn’t like my setup.  Mostly for my reel.

rods feel interchangeable

For under 1/2oz I'd get either a GLX 853 JWR or a GLX 843 MBR.

Is anyone fishing the Shimano Poison Adrena series? Worth a shot?

The Poison adrena series are great rods.

To each their own, but i got rid of my Conquest's and GLX'S and kept my Adrenas.

I just picked one of these up from flea bay. Always wanted to try the MBR action so this is an affordable way to do it ($145). Can you (and others who fish it) tell me a bit more about what you liked throwing on it and why? Any line preference for the rod? Thanks!

NRX+ 873 followed by Steez BC2. Own both and haven’t fished the new FMJ. The 873 is also a decent Carolina rig rod.

Thanks for the input everyone! I ended up with:

NRX+ 904c MBR

Steez AGS Bottom Contact 2

Plan is to use the BC2 for t-rigs, and 904c for Jigs/C-rigs/big swing impacts

I have the Steez BC1 (little longer tip and heavier but better balanced) and it's a fantastic all-around jig rod. It has a little more bend than the BC2 but not so much I can't pull them out of laydowns or pick up bites just fine. You're going to love it. I would add some U45 cork sealant to that cork the day you get it though, Daiwas cork pits the worst.

Both rods are generally interchangable in their usage.

Since cost is no issue then GLX or NRX 843 and 844 MBRs. Since you're already familiar with G Loomis MBR.

This is your answer. Or you could try 853 JWR instead of the 843. No wrong answer with these rods.

@speakingofjared any update on how the rods perform? Any new additions since then?

He hasn’t been here since March so probably won’t get an answer anytime soon
