Why do people leave their lures just hanging there when not in use?

I generally use a backup with a senko, and I keep it at the ready. I mostly bank fish, and it's no problem to lay my rod down on the bank, making sure the lure and line is not in some weeds or brush.

Not me some of mine are too heavy and too expensive to dare do that. I'm always concerned about the handle getting turned and damaging the tip guide.

You need lure wraps!

Reading through this thread I get the impression that many members are against reeling a bait up to the top eye.

I do it every time out but not reeling into the eye with any resistance.

Release a foot of line and then cast.

To much dangle will invite a tangle ?

I'd rather have my line get tangled then me get stuck with a hook.  I'd also rather not have that stress on the bend of the line in the same spot every time until I retie.  On my fly rods I have to use the hook keeper.

I do fish out of a kayak not that it makes a huge difference for this question.

I secure anything with trebles, buzzbaits, spinnerbaits and bladed jigs when I'm done with them. Sometimes I just reel soft plastics up really close to the top, sometimes I secure them. That's while running the outboard.

If on the t/m, I always have a follow up bait dangling, ready for use just in case.

No real reason for it, it just is what it is

@GreenPig already gave me the real reason for “dangling.”

”Lazy bad habit.”

I marked his response as the solution.

No dangling for this guy. 5 seconds or less is not an issue here.

I "dangle" for 2 reasons. And lazy bad habit isn't one of them.

1) My Expride rods have no lure keeper and I refuse to either remove the lure or put the hook on the eye. So I dangle at end of rod.

2) When said "dangler" is in the rod holder, it's roughly 9 feet off the deck of my boat (see image) and completely out of the way. I'd even go so far as to say my lure is safer this way than a rod with a keeper on the deck or gunnel of a boat.

I've also seen Bass Pros "dangle" in the heat of the moment.

YMMV.

Not sure, but I know I view guys who reel their lure to the tip guide the same as I view this guy

Ha!  I do both!

I'll usually reel T-rig or shaky head worms up to the top, so I don't have to pull the hook out of the soft plastic.  And sometimes I'm just lazy.  Also, if you have all of your rods lined up along side one another and all of your treble hook lures are also lined up, they tend to get tangled up.  So having half of them reeled up to the tip and the other half in the tender helps with that.  I don't store them long term that way, as it's not good for the rod.  But I'll do it if I'm switching between rods often.

And I'll turn the rod upside down and fish if someone in a boat near me is cutting me off, crowding me, or doing something else rude.  Then I'll out fish them and make sure to show off what all I'm catching.  It really angers them to see someone who "doesn't even know how to hold a rod" catch fish in an area where they can't, and usually gets them to move along.

Broken hook keeper?

Way too many people doing it for that many hook keepers to be broken. It’s laziness.

It isn't lazy if they choose to do it that way.  It is only lazy because you think they are doing it wrong.

This.

It would be like me calling people "lazy" because they don't religiously put their rods in a holder every single time it's not in use like I do.

I do wonder though..how many rods don't come with a keeper at all? Neither of my Exprides have them. Or does that mean Shimano is "lazy"? LOL ?

Consider how sharp hook barbs are! When a lure snags one of your rods line left dangling or laid on the deck the barb stops on the line and necks it. No wonder random line breaks occur away from the lure knot.

I respectfully disagree, sir.

I have seen absolutely no difference in random line breaks between "danglers" and "keepers".

Yep, barbs damage line anytime they sang them.

My OCD would not allow this. Hook keeper every time.

Same for me.

Obviously most of these guys saying danglers are wrong don't fish from a kayak. I have 4 rod holders on my crate, 2 Yakattack Omegas and only carry 6 rods at the most. When fishing though, I will leave a weightless fluke dangling as a follow up for a buzzbait or if I'm trying something else while getting bit on the primary technique that day.

Yep, have seen the pros do that too.

Being a jig fisherman who still uses real pork rind I keep that rod wit the pork rind in the water when not using it....dangling! It’s 1 rod and I keep an eye on it! When I moving the boat all y lures get lure wrapped and strapped down.

I'm a dangler while fishing down a bank. I usually have 3 - 4 rods on the right side of the deck leaning on my TM cable ready to throw. If I'm working down a shoreline, I may have a jig, a square bill, some sort of texas rig and likely a senko all at the ready depending on the various types of cover I come up on.

Then, as Tom suggested,... If I decide to move, I tie them all down to their hook keepers and strap them to the deck before firing up the motor to move.

40 years of fishing and it has worked just fine with nobody losing an eye.

In fact, the one time either my wife or I got hooked (other than a fish throwing a bait and getting hooked in the hand or arm) was when she got out of the boat to make a shoreline bio break at a remote lake and when getting back in,...sat on a jerkbait hooked to the hook keeper of a rod strapped to the deck. If it had been "Dangling" that bay wouldn't now be lovingly known as Butt-Hurt Bay!!

The angle of the dangle is directly related…

To the mangle of the tangle?
