Do you consider a full size jig with 4”-5” rather beefy trailer a bait that is too large for smallmouth? I’ve noticed that you tend to throw rather large baits for them, generally speaking 1 Quote

For local bass preference is 4/0 or 5/0 hook and I use a rage bug, craw and even a Lobster at times. Will snip off a segment off the body. Finally my focus is not tight eyes. A-Jay 2 1 Quote

I may run into SMB by chance, but nice to know that if I think I have some of them located and would like to target them that I can throw a nice big jig for them Quote

txchaser Posted September 19, 2023 Posted September 19, 2023 Was mostly 20lb tatsu, decided to try 17lb tatsu and I like it more. It's smaller (yay) and it is still nearly impossible to break by hand on a snag, at least with a double SDJ knot. If I know I'm going to get abraided a lot I'd swap back to 20. As a bonus but not why I switched, 1000yd spools of 17 go on sale all the time, which is really nice. FYI 17lb Tatsu is smaller than 12lb BG, or the same size depending on whether you are reading the inches or mm. And in between 17/19lb armilo. Quote
Super User ATA Posted September 19, 2023 Super User Posted September 19, 2023 I use 14lb Absolute Varivas, First I got to try, But later I was hooked. Best line for application. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted September 19, 2023 Super User Posted September 19, 2023 For most jigs I use 14 and 16lb Sunline BMS Sniper. For punching jigs and grass, I just started using 50lb YGK Upgrade. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted September 19, 2023 Super User Posted September 19, 2023 I have used 15lb yozuri hybrid and also 30 or 40lb braid. I prefer the hybrid when fishing rocks as it is way more abrasion resistant but all other situations I am going straight braid. Fishing bottom baits on straight braid is a little different than the other types of line though as you lose slack line sensitivity but I am a religious line watcher and your line shouldn't be slack with those presentations anyways. I also loosen my drag a touch on braid set ups to accommodate for the no stretch scenario. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted September 19, 2023 Posted September 19, 2023 About 99% of my jig fishing is 15lb Seagaur Inviz X 2 Quote

You get the idea I still really like big game. It’s just that you have to be aware that you are using much heavier line than advertised 1 Quote
Fishingmickey Posted September 19, 2023 Posted September 19, 2023 Since it hasn't been mentioned yet. Diawa Samurai Fluorocarbon. I use the 12# for finesse-y jig or T-rig and 16# or 18# for full sized jig and t-rig in heavy cover or weeds/lilly pads. FM Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted September 19, 2023 Super User Posted September 19, 2023 i like 14lb Sunline Sniper. i get a lot of fish with the long bomb blind-cast for fish in clearer waters. the fish see me and my kayak, and they rarely bite. 14 allows me juice, and i can cast it farther. just this past week, my shop was out of 14, and i went up to 16. not bad!!! it can still cast far, and i do admit i like the added security of the stronger connection. only 2 fish so far. long run? i'll go back to 14 before next spring/summer 1 Quote
thediscochef Posted September 19, 2023 Posted September 19, 2023 I've been using 14# sufix elite, which is great line. Stays strong, has the right amount of stretch for a mono line. I just spooled a few with 14# Sufix Tritanium Plus though - I'm really impressed so far. It's extremely castable and impossible to break a palomar knot off without a dowel. Also .001" smaller than the Elite. We will see how it holds up with some time and use around concrete pillars and large rip rap. The saltwater guys have sworn by it for a long time and that usually means at least something. I'm curious to see if I find an obvious reason why it isn't the primary plastic mainline in bass fishing, it's a third the cost per yard for # equivalent Elite and so far I like it way better. It is still more expensive than Big Game, but way less stretch, less slinky-coiling, smaller diameter for same tensile strength. I would be curious to know how the knot strengths relative to tensile strengths compare between tritanium and big game. I set the hook on a tiny spotted bass that ate a walking bait at 50yd this morning, easy sweep set and it was pinned. That usually requires cartoon motions with all types of standard mono, which in my opinion gives up some level of control right away Quote

I've tried straight mono, Fluoro and braid. Braid to various flavors of leader material have also been tried. I've liked the sensitivity and hook setting power that braid to leader offers but don't love the extra knot. I've yet to try a copolymer. What's your line setup for jigs and the like? this is easy !!!! kill the leader !!!!! 1 Quote

I seriously doubt they see it & scream oh no it's braid, there has to be humans near! There have been scientific studies on this. If a bass sees a jig, they usually think "Yes! There's a crawdad/bluegill!" If there's braid being used, they think it's the crawdad's/bluegill's umbilical cord. So it really doesn't deter them from biting. (hey, it sounds good at least) 3 Quote

Super User Boomstick Posted September 22, 2023 Super User Posted September 22, 2023 I do most of my jig fishing in 16# fluorocarbon, and most of my T-Rigs on 12# fluorocarbon but occasionally 16# depending on cover 1 Quote

Super User Catt Posted September 23, 2023 Super User Posted September 23, 2023 Don't understand why y'all so concerned about line diameter? Thicker diameter, more material for abrasion to wear through. 2 Quote
Fishin Dad Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 When fishing boat docks and lifts while skipping and pitching jigs, I use 15-20 lb fluoro, usually Trilene 100%. I get it very cheap in Spirit Lake at their outlet store. I like that is has hardly any stretch compared to other fluorocarbon lines and it is tough. I know it has a larger diameter than most, but docks and lifts tear up fishing line BAD. When fishing less nasty stuff, I use 12-15 lb. Fluoro. If fishing jigs in the weeds, I use 30-50lb. straight Braid. Quote
