Bass XL Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 All right heres what i am wondering... I got a free (new) spool of Wally Marshall line (yellowish/greenish) from a buddy. i have never used this line and i am going on a fishing trip this weekend and plan on fishing jigs....what my question is, is should i try this color on a jig or can it be spotted by bass?? even if you havent used this brand, what would you do.....use it or stick with the clear stuff? thanks you guys! Hawgin Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 I'm not completely familiar with the line you are refering to, but I fish my jigs on 50# power pro and I'm sure fish can probably see it. Doesn't seem to affect the jig bite for me. I guess it would also depend on how clear the water is that you will be fishing. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted November 7, 2006 Super User Posted November 7, 2006 What size line is it? If memory serves, that is line designed for crappie fishing. It may be too light for bass fishing. I'm using 12lb Transition for jig fishing. Just started using a jig a lot this year, and I've found that you have to be a line watcher. For me that rules out clear line. It's too hard for me to see. Transition is clear underwater and a bright yellowish color in the sunlight. I can see it very well. If you can see clear line, then go ahead with it. If that free line you have is 10 or better, might as well give it a shot. It's free, right? Good luck, GK Quote
Bud Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 That line is for crappie fishing and not very good for that. Quote
Bass XL Posted November 8, 2006 Author Posted November 8, 2006 yeah its 10 pound line...they have the four pound for crappie....but why would anyone use 10 pound line for crappie?? Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted November 8, 2006 Super User Posted November 8, 2006 I use braid and BRAID ONLY for fishing jigs, I like that it has almost zero stretch, very important for quick hard hooksets. Also the sensitivity of braid can't be beat when trying to feel at times when fishing a jig is a very subtle bite. I don't worry about the visability of it, as I have plucked 5lb bass out of 2' of crystal clear pressured water using it, I think it's more important to downsize the jig, and not let the bass see you. I use 20lb spiderwire stealth, small diam. tough and strong.I don't seem to have the problems as others claim with using the small diamter braid, plus it gives me greater casting distance. And 20lb test is strong enough to toss a jig into the nasty stuff and bring the bass in. The only time I have ever broken off 20lb braid is when BIG pike have totaly mouthed the bait and cut it with there teeth. Quote
mike bat Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 yea i like a beefy co poly when tossin jigs .... i really like p-line cxx moss green in 15-20lb .... and if im fishin the heavy stuff will use a power-pro 50lb ... i noticed when jig fishing you really have to send that hook home ... and any lighter lines may have a little too much stretch ... Super User Alpster Posted November 8, 2006 Super User Posted November 8, 2006 Braid was made for jigs, set the hook when you see the line move. JMHO Ronnie Quote
