I had this problem for almost three seasons too.  I had bought two of them during a BOGO 1/2 off sale and tossed them over and over without any strikes.  I wondered how they ever caught fish.

 

Then one day in late May, I tied on a perch colored one for smallmouth during the prespawn period and hammered them.  Many of these fish were suspended on sonar.  That one trip was a real eye opener.  Since then I started using them more for largemouth too, although I will admit they seem more geared towards smallmouth fishing.

It's not the only way to present the bait,

but it's how I 'figured' them out in the beginning.

And it's been such a killer bait, I just needed to slow my roll.

What I'm describing is very similar to fishing a blade bait.

In cooler water the bait is allowed to go back to the bottom on a tight line.

In warmer conditions a slack line fall seems a bit better.

Thanks @A-Jay for the chatterbait tips. I too, have never been successful with one, though I just started with them this year.

 

I have never been very successful with Carolina rigs, though I've tried them off and on for years. I have caught at least one bass on one that I recall.

 

I've never caught anything on a whopper plopper, though I do fish one semi regularly since finding a handful of them. Topwater for me has aways worked pretty good with frogs, poppers, jitterbugs, spit'n images.

 

I never had any luck with a Devils Horse, but it's on my radar to get another and give it a go some more.

Thanks, A-Jay. I'm eternally hopeful. However, if I were to try skipping a vibrating jig at a dock, my hope might finally wane.

You must of ain't tried enough... from the looks of the trees around where I frequent, there are plenty of attempts. I surpmise the bass roost at night, and it's the early birds that leave their evidence behind.

I ain't ever caught a huge bass, like 8 pounds or more. I've caught a couple solid 4-5 pounders. I have eyes for some DD bass, as well as the state record largemouth. That said, I always am excited even for a 1 pounder. I just enjoy fishing, particularly for bass.

 

I also ain't ever caught a bass with a lure in it's mouth, which is something I think would be awesome. Especially if the lure was something I would use, and then do well with.

I'm not sure if this is an obscure Seinfeld reference, but back around 1979 or 1980, my brother told me that I have to come check out this new comedian that was playing at a local restaurant named. . . . Howie Mandel. So we make plans to go see a dinner show and the night we show up, they tell us that Howie Mandel is no longer appearing there, but they will be having a show with someone else. We talked it over and were just about to leave and then decided to go ahead and stay to see this new comedian we had never heard of before named. . . Jerry Seinfeld. One of the best comedy shows I have seen. My face hurt the next day from laughing so much.

Since (as I explained earlier) I'm not an experienced skirted jig angler (to put it nicely), so . . . . As with many things, I have decided to try smaller versions of the 'chatterbait' to achieve some success.

I have never rounded down the weight of a bass I caught or lost.  A 5 and 3/4 pound bass has a good chance of becoming a 6 pounder with time, but a 5 1/4 pound bass will never be referred to as being 5 pounds.
