xjbmx Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 I recently picked up a new falcon original rod for $20 at wally world. I like the rod but I prefer shorter handles and this one is LONG. Is there any decent way to shorten it? Like cutting and capping it off? Thanks guys Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted November 7, 2006 Super User Posted November 7, 2006 Check out Reelmech's website. Look at how he does balancing. that will give you some tips on removing the butt cap, so you can reuse it. After that you're on your own. I've never tried this. Let us know how you do. I have a couple of older rods that would be better, in my opinion, with a shorter handle. Good luck, GK Quote

Super User Marty Posted November 8, 2006 Super User Posted November 8, 2006 I have one rod whose handle I cut and capped and am thinking about another. I also know a guy from another forum who builds rods who shortened a handle because it interfered with fishing from a kayak. I'm like you, I dislike the long handles that are found on most rods. Bud Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 I know a guy who cut the handle off of a rod. He them weight it with lead to balance it. work ok for him. Quote
Guest DavidGreen Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 I have seen 7" to 10" grips on rods from 6'6" to 7'. If your talking a long handle 7" or better on a 6'6" rod it will throw the weight forward and make it tip heavy. Same if you shorten a 9" or 10" grip on a 7' rod. When manufacturers place the seat and grip, they have a predetermined setup to get a balance point just in front of the foregrip. Shorten the rear grip, and you get a tip heavy or weight forward rod. This not to say that you can't cut one back, and then as Bud say add lead to the rod to balance it. But it will take a lot of lead to get it back to a decent balance point.
