We just had one here !!! The leading edge of it was something.
I looked out when the power went off. Everything was going sideways.

Then I noticed something I could hardly believe.

My 12 foot jon boat sitting in the yard.

That wind blew the boat up over the dock and out of the lake app. 15 feet , and 5 feet higher than the water.AND I had 2 anchors attached to the boat on the dock.

A bucket 25 feet away on a table is still there.

How high of a gust do you think it would have to be to do that?

After taking direct hits of 2 Cat 5 hurricanes, I have a greater understanding and respect for the thier power.

You could have had a small tornado come through and do that, especially being that the bucket didn’t move.

As far as straight line winds I would guess at least 60+, but again being that the bucket is still there I vote for a small tornado.

Just be thankful you weren’t in it!

Power is back on. Still lightning too much to go out and assess damage.
@Mike L I would be interested in hearing your description of a cat 5 hurricane being that you were in them. The worst Ive been in is a strong cat. 2. Of course , we’ve gotten many tropical storms, and the outer effects of stronger hurricanes…

I met a lady that went through Andrew, and she was visibly shaken in describing it…

@Catt, you’ve been through some bad storms yourself. What’s the worst one you’ve been through? I’ve read some terrifying stories about Audrey…

Fir content I live less than 2 miles from Charlotte Harbor and about 5 from the Gulf.

In 2004 Hurricane Charlie was moving north in the Gulf with its projected path toward Tampa. When it reached The mouth of Charlotte Harbor it turned right and made land fall.
I had my wife, daughter and her to small kids with me.
I put them in a hallway between 2 bedrooms and a bathroom and grabbed 2 mattresses and every pillow in the house.
I put them all face down on the floor and covered them up, then laid down on top of them.

The windows were shaking and the glass sliding doors leading to our lanai were pulsating in and out.
After about 1/2 hr, my brother who lived about a mile away called checking on us as the winds died down and the sun came out.
I looked outside and all I could see was a wall of black and grey clouds just swirling around left to right. We were in the eye.

I sustained some roof damage but was fortunately saved by a huge Heritage Oak tree that dispersed the winds enough to save my house.
We had no power for 8 days.
Charlie was a fast mover which was a blessing in itself as it could have been much much worse.

Last year Hurricane Ian was!

We were in the eye wall for 10 hours straight. They said it had winds of 162mph

This time my whole family was here and just hung on and rode it out.
It was the worst and scariest thing I’ve ever been through.
The rain looked like smoke blowing sideways!

My daughter lives on the shore of the Peace River. Her home sustained over 180k of damage that they’re still repairing.
We had no power or water for 8 days in 90+ degree weather.

I have a few videos that I took which gives a better sense of what it was like but they won’t post on this response.
I guess because of the pictures

Thanks for sharing that Mike. The videos I watched about Ian didn’t do justice to how it really was, I’m sure. We got the remnant of it up here, but it was only a tropical storm by then…

Audrey made landfall as a Cat3, but in 1957 early warning of weather events were pretty much nonexistent. Audrey stalled off the coast of Cameron, LA giving residents a false sense security. Evacuation of those coastal areas was hindered by the fact the was only one highway out. Total number of deaths was over 500 with the real number unknown. Most deaths were attributed to a 10-12' tidal surge.

I was 6 at the time & vividly remember body bags stacked like cord wood.

Thanks for sharing that @Catt

Found out from niegbors we probably had a tornado go through, or maybe a downburst. Lots of trees down…

@N Florida Mike we got the edge of it  last night. It was a little interesting for awhile here.
I'm going with @Mike L small twister. The wind was coming from all directions, and had some hail.

Did it break the lines or just drag anchors?

My wife was employed by Ma Bell for 33 years & until Hurricane Rita the office here never closed. I can not tell y'all how many severe thunder storms, tropical depressions, tropical storms, & hurricanes up to cat3 I drove through getting her back & forth to work.

Rita was the most intense tropical cyclone on record in the Gulf of Mexico & the fourth-most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded.

I had Carolann at work the next morning!

It didn’t break the anchor lines, it just blew it up out of the lake, anchors and all. I wish I had seen it happen…

NAS jax recorded a 61 mph gust during the storm. It is right across the river from us. But I don’t think that could have been strong enough  to do  that to my boat .

I am very thankful and lucky that up here I rarely have to deal with a hurricane. Usually if anything does make it this far north it is no longer a full blown hurricane. We end up with rain and some wind. Anyone who lives down south and deals with that has a huge set up stones on them.
