Justbass11 Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 I was just wondering if I might have too many rods/reels? I have 1 spinning and 9 baitcast rods and reels, all rigged differently. The reason I ask such a foolish question by some is because I don’t fish tournaments. I know some may be thinking have I gone mad? Is it wrong to think of getting more? I don’t belong to a club and again I don’t do tournaments. So please keep this in mind when you think I am crazy and give me the “what kind of stupid question is that, to many rods.” Anyway have a blessed day 2 Quote
Big Hands Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 Only 9? Shut the front door ;~) Expecting outsiders to understand is crazy talk. The only person it needs to make sense to is. . . you. 6 2 Quote
CaughtMeABiggun Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 Too many rods or reels is like having a car too fast. Not possible. I am a weekend warrior. Don’t fish tournaments and am not in a bass club. I have around 30 baitcasting setups and bout 7 spinning reels that I actively rotate through. I have another 6 to 10 rods stored in rod tubes and a reserve fleet of reels ready for action. I have found the longer I fish I have moved from more do all rods to more specialized setups. Naturally that means more rods and reels. Whether you have one outfit or one hundred it’s all about getting that line wet one more time. 2 Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted September 9, 2023 Super User Posted September 9, 2023 I have over 40 combos at the moment. There are guys here who have more. You're good! 3 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted September 9, 2023 Super User Posted September 9, 2023 I'm not near the numbers of others - and I don't do tournaments either. But - I do have 11 casting rigs and 5 spinning rigs relegated to bass...that doesn't include the 4 spinning rigs for panfishing. 1 Quote
TimTheGearNerd Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 I don’t do tournaments. Collecting gear is fun and I like to try out the products out there. I lose count but I think I have at least 15 combos. The high end stuff in the $300-500 range keeps their value better if you get it used. ? Quote
Bazoo Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 I'd say get another if it suits you. Maybe another spinning combo would be the best choice. I only have 1 baitcasting combo, and 1 spinning combo, but my spinning reel just bit the dust. I do have another spinning reel, but it's vintage and clicks when you crank the handle, which I don't care for (the clicking). Worse though, is it won't allow you to close the bail by hand, you must spin it closed. Not sure if I'll succumb to need and use it or not. I do have a Zebco 33 but don't have a rod for it currently. I gave a new angler a spincasting combo, but the rod broke so I gave him the rod the 33 was on to keep him going. For now, I am just making do with the baitcaster and not using anything lighter than 1/4 oz. Quote
newapti5 Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 You are asking that question at the wrong place, my friend. It's like an alcoholic went to a supposed AA meeting, but realized it's a wine tasting party in disguise. I have "downgraded" my reel collection from over 50 to about 17, 18, and the next step for me is to do the same with my rod collection. 4 Quote
Super User islandbass Posted September 9, 2023 Super User Posted September 9, 2023 @Justbass11: for asking such a question on this site, all the bait monkeys have laid down their verdict — GUILTY. on a serious note, if they all serve you a purpose, then no. You cannot have too many. Your arsenal could probably use 2-3 more spinning setups. ? 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted September 9, 2023 Global Moderator Posted September 9, 2023 I do tournaments as a co angler and have 8 total but only use 6, also rigged differently. If you think You’re Good. You are. Mike 4 Quote
Super User MickD Posted September 9, 2023 Super User Posted September 9, 2023 It's like women's shoes and purses: One cannot have too many rods/reels. 3 Quote

Is this really a sanity check, or more of a guilt thing? If you're in debt and not paying bills you're probably batty buying more stuff. If you're feeling ashamed over your indulgences, you can buy your way out of it by donating something to a charity in the form of your time or money. If it's neither, kick back and enjoy your neurotic obsession without apology because it's fun. He who dies with the most toys... 3 Quote

Super User bulldog1935 Posted September 9, 2023 Super User Posted September 9, 2023 I reached the point, think I've bought my last LP baitcaster (6) and already overstocked on spinning combos. But my bench is calling for more Ambassadeurs to tune, and I'll follow Yahoo in Japan for those very rare (about once/ or twice/yr) good buys on Isuzu. My favorite Ambassadeur bench result is on '77 4500C For the curious, the most valuable reel collection in the world is paring down and has a For-Sale list. Super User Mobasser Posted September 9, 2023 Super User Posted September 9, 2023 Don't even worry. Most bass have too many rods and reels. Bass guys are notorious for loving nice tackle, and buying more, even if they don't really need it. 1 1 Quote
Super User king fisher Posted September 9, 2023 Super User Posted September 9, 2023 If you are catching to many fish, and the fish are to big, then maybe you have to many rods. 1 1 Quote

volzfan59 Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 In my serious tournament fishing days, I had around 40 combos, casting and spinning. After retiring from my job and tournament angling I now have and use six casting combos and four spinning combos for bass fishing, different actions. Also have three spinning combos for panfish and trout fishing. 3 Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted September 9, 2023 Super User Posted September 9, 2023 That’s not a dumb question. Far from it. Look at each combo as a system to address a specific situation and multiple combos makes perfect sense. You have to choose how many systems you can afford. There’s nothing wrong with being efficient. 1 Quote
TLHSS Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 I think it’s a great question as well. I choose to fish with a minimum amount of gear. I came to this conclusion by studying where I fish, what type of fish I target, and the techniques that consistently produce fish. I learned to remove marketing and influencer speak, and stick with what I know works. For me, that means less gear. We live in an environment where companies consistently push the idea that more is better … and not just with fishing. Old age has taught me that it just isn’t true, once you separate marketing from reality. Quote

Dye99 Posted September 13, 2023 Posted September 13, 2023 I do some yak tourneys and even guide on occasion but I primarily fish for fun. Yak fisherman. Growing up in Germany we were always told that certain tools are for certain jobs so that mentality as I grew older stuck with me. One set up for one technic. Period. Im not the guy who uses a rod for 4 different technics. So with that said Ive got 8 spinning rods, and 6 bait casters. But I usually only take 6-8 with me a day depending on what I will need due to location and weather. Spinning-Wacky senko, shakey head, dropshot, ned rig, spy bait, tube, Jerkbait, fluke. Casting- Crankbait, chatter bait, Jig, topwater, Frog, swimbait Quote
JackstrawIII Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 I don’t fish tournaments… and I have 25 setups all ready to go at this moment. If fishing is your hobby and you want more rods, get them. I like having the exact rod I want for each technique, so I’ve slowly gathered them over the years. I like it trying new rods, so… there ya go. Other peoples opinions are best ignored… but that’s just my opinion. Quote
