I'm starting to get into jig fishing. Love throwing a 3/8 oz jig with a craw trailer. My question is this: I am throwing these on braid. Should I be using a fluoro leader?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

It depends on the color of the braid, your water clarity and time of year.  I can get by with no leader now because our water is dingy.  That’s not the case in cold, clear, winter water.

No reason to use braid unless you are fish heavy aquatic plant cover. I used mono for about 40 years and FC for about 20 years. Straight line no leader.

I don’t like FC line knot strength but do like it’s low coefficient of drag cutting though water resulting in better jig feedback and strike detection do to less bow in the line.

I use 12 lb/ .011D Tatsu or Shooter.

Seems like if FC advantages stated here are important, then braid would offer even more of them.  Especially the sinking braids.  I don't get this logic. ??

Rocky structure lakes and sinking braid don’t mix well. Floating braid is a little better around rocks until you snag a jig then it tends to break off just jiggling the jig loose. If the line doesn’t break it’s frayed badly and you must re tie. Braid with leader = 2 knots, no way around that.

I'll use a mono leader when fishing a jig or trig in deep rock just to make breaking off easier. Otherwise, straight 40# or 50# 832.

I run a braid to FC leader for everything but my drop shot. The rocks fray up the braid and I prefer the feel of braid for most things.

@MickD plus, fluoro is better on sensitivity with slack in the line. Braid good sensitivity when line is tight.

There are good arguments to use any line or combination of lines. I prefer straight mono or fluoro for jigs.

I lose jigs a lot in brush and lay downs. Straight braid is a disaster, have to cut off and leave line out which I hate to do. I’m in the straight mono camp. Don’t like floro, my knots always fail.

ALL of my jig fishing is done with braid to FC leaders. I use 12-20lb leaders depending on cover, water clarity, rate of fall I want, and the type of jig I'm using. It works great, and I've been doing it for years.

I like a strait braid system with jigs because I can feel the hits instantly. With a sensitive rod it's like direct contact. Often, a jig hit by a large bass can be very soft and subtle, hardly felt. Their mouth is so big, they literally scoop the jig up. Hits like that are hardly felt as it is. And if not acted upon immediately, usually means a missed fish. Braid transmits those subtle vibrations way better than mono or floro, imho. There's also no stretch or leader knots in a strait braid system. All energy is transmitted to the hookset. Strait braid can also be a necessity, like down here in the south Floirda everglades, for example, it's a must in my book! I've tried all the mono floro configurations imaginable with marginal results.

No leaders.  Either straight fluoro or straight braid, depending on the cover you're fishing.

Heavy cover = braid

Sparse cover = flouro

I'm not big into the extra knot in a leader set up. I've gone back to straight mono for everything, adjusting the strength to the situation.

I have purchased a spool of Yo Zuri copolymer line to try out. Haven't had the opportunity it yet.

I went from braid only to Fluorocarbon only to braid to Fluorocarbon leader back to fluorocarbon only to big game.

I haven't broken off or lost a fish since switching my heavy flipping to 20 lb big game.  Seems plenty sensitive.

I'm with Glenn - straight braid in heavy cover, straight FC in sparse cover or open water.

Lately I've been using a high-vis braid with a fluorocarbon leader, joined with an FG knot. This is my recipe to have confidence for bite detection. Nothing wrong with straight braid or straight fluoro. Gotta figure out what works for your circumstances and your style.

Straight Vicious No Fade Braid In 30 lb. Moss green. Fish rocks all the time if it frays I retie. No different from other lines. I am currently using 30 lb through rocks. Using football jigs saves a lot of lures .

I like hi-viz braid for bite detection. I'll camo the last foot or so with a green or black sharpie. If the water is super clear, I'll go with straight fluorocarbon or mono.

When you have shopping carts or abandoned cars in your canals and lakes, like here in South Florida ? leader is handy to break off, when necessary ?
