GetFishorDieTryin Posted September 2, 2023 Posted September 2, 2023 For anyone who has 1 or both of these reels, how do they compare to eachother and their counterpart Shimanos? How do the 70 and 80 compare to the 100 in frame size? Never owned a Tatula, but have some limited use with the 150. I found the frame to be a little awkward to hold, but liked how the reel performed. TYIA. Quote
FrnkNsteen Posted September 2, 2023 Posted September 2, 2023 I don't have the Tatula 80, but I do have the Tatula SV 70. They are a little smaller than the Tatula 100 and Tatula SV103. I also have the JDM Alphas SV 800 and I believe the SV70 shares the same basic frame. Here are some images of the SV70 next to the Alphas SV as well as a side by side of the SV103 and the SV70. Here are the SV70 and the SV103 2 Quote
Eric 26 Posted September 2, 2023 Posted September 2, 2023 I have a few Tatulas including the older Type R (150 size) and a newer 100 and an 80. The 80 is substantially smaller than the Type R and narrower than the 100. I believe the 80 is built on the SV800 frame but don’t quote me on that. It is by far the most comfortable Tatula I own. 1 Quote
00bullitt Posted September 2, 2023 Posted September 2, 2023 I have both. 70 and 80 frames are the same. 70 spool is SV and shallow. 80 spool is deeper and holds more line. Casting with the SV is different; if you cast too hard, it actually reduces distance as the brakes engage. I use it as my jerkbait reel on an Expride 6'10" Medium. Its very palmable....moreso than a Curado 70. Its near impossible to backlash. Super smooth. Downside is that it holds very little line. I think about 70 yards of 12# test. The 80 is deeper and will hold about 90 yards of 15# test. I love them both. The 70 casts lighter baits better than the 80, and surprisingly further with less effort. 1 Quote
PBBrandon Posted September 2, 2023 Posted September 2, 2023 The 100 and 70/80 size Daiwas palm a lot better than the Tatula 150. I had a Tat 70SV and it was good, but the Alphas SV is a lot better and cheaper from Japan. If you are looking at US market Tatulas, you can get a lot more bang for your buck getting an Alphas SV (80 size) or a Zillion SV (100 size) from Japan. 2 top of the line reels for Tatula prices. Both are very good in hand (subjective of course), but performance wise, both reels have no flaws 2 Quote

I only ask because I had an opportunity to get the Tatula 80 just under 100$ and it really tempted me. If I wasn't having a custom Century built I would have pulled the trigger, that 100$ is almost the difference between Titanium SICs or Torzite. The Zillion is the size of the 103SV right? 1 Quote

Looking at them side by side, the 103SV frame is a touch longer and it’s a little heavier. They feel a little different in hand Quote

I like my Alphas with its free floating spool over the others as well, and the Alphas through the JDM sites is a better deal than regular price on a Tat 70/80. I wish Daiwa would have released the Alphas in the US market with the Zillion as they are both great reels. That being said,... if someone doesn't like the idea of buying from JDM dealers and no warranty, the Tatula 70 and 80 are both decent options that are getting pretty good feedback,..... And for under $100 as mentioned above??? Kind of a no brainer!!! Oh,... And I would have to go grab both to pick up and confirm, but if memory serves correctly, the Zillion G is just a touch smaller than the 2020 Sv103 and the brake dial sits lower on the side plate. I actually bump it with my index finger at times and accidently change it. It's the only thing I don't like about that new Zillion. 1 Quote

If it had been a 70sv I would have pulled the trigger for sure, it would make a great little flatside balsa reel. 1 Quote
KP Duty Posted September 3, 2023 Posted September 3, 2023 Tat 70 and Alphas would be comparable, with the alphas having a free-floating spool. Tat 80 is a diffrrent animal that can utilize heavier line and larger baits. Quote

Maybe it's because of the floating spool over the shafted spool of the Tatula SV70?? I couldn't say for sure. To be honest though, I haven't had the SV70 long enough to use it a lot while I have used the Alphas much more. I currently have the Alphas on a St Croix Legend X, loaded with flouro, and pitching and skipping a Fat Ika around cover. 1 Quote
