My old Daiwa Revros is only 7.4 oz, 4+1 ball bearing but is very smooth, and has good line lay. I bought it in a combo at Canadian Tire for only about $80 ($60 usd). What things might I observe with a more expensive reel, given that I've been quite happy with reels that are under $50 usd? I will say that the law of diminishing returns comes in quicker on spinning reels than on baitcasters in my opinion, in that the higher you go in price, the less and less gain you begin to see. Not as much difference between a $150 and $250 reel as you typically see between a $50 and $150 reel. I felt the same as you in that I don't see huge differences between the lower level Daiwas and the upper level reels. I always said that I can't justify spending the money for a higher dollar spinning reel and usually stayed with Daiwa Regals and Pfleuger President reels. Now that being said,... I splurged and traded in to get a Vanford 3000 at this year's Bass Pro Spring Classic sale. I put it on my Fenwick ET Smallmouth rod throwing wacky stick baits. While on our annual smallie trip up to Ontario I began to notice just how tight and smooth everything was on the Vanford from casting to reeling it back in. No spool noise rattling on the cast, and catching fish was smooth and steady. Came to love how that reel fishes. Can't really explain the difference,....it's just there. There is a difference in the higher dollar spinning reels.... It is just subtle. Don't go expecting the clouds to part and angels singing. Just give them time and appreciate how well they fish. The other benefit is they will likely last quite a bit longer than the cheaper reels before they start loosening up and getting sloppy and noisy. Fyi.... Since coming back from our trip I bought another Vanford used off ALF and found a great deal on a couple Stradic FL reels. ?? A few of my 11 ounce Presidents are now sitting in a box to donate or trade in. 1 Quote
LCG Posted September 2, 2023 Posted September 2, 2023 Fellow Canadian here, Sail (the outdoor store) has the Daiwa Tatula LT on sale for $180 CAD. I picked one up in the spring and it has treated me very well. I purchased the 2000 size, holds plenty of line and comes in at 6.1 oz. The Shimano Stradic FL is another solid choice. Had one for a few years, but sold it for a lighter reel for finesse focused techniques. Solid and smooth reel though. 1 Quote

If you over-reel a bit, how do you release line if there's too much tension to easily flip the bail? Example: When I'm not fishing, I will often fasten my leader or swivel to the hook keeper on the rod. For various reasons someone might turn the handle, bending the rod tip a bit. I would usually just flip the antiverse switch, real backwards a half turn, and then turn the anti reverse switch back on. Quote

Shimano was the first, now all the models of Pflueger don't have AR switches anymore...it's a growing trend. Quote

I won't buy a reel without a switch, and fiddling with the drag to let out a little line is something I'm not willing to put up with. Most if not all Daiwa reels still have the switch. Quote

Having the switch does seem very convenient. If I did not have it I suppose I could get used to it, but a real advantages would have to be pretty high for me to sacrifice the switch. Quote

I don't like Daiwas cause they seem to think you need 'a million miles' of line on the reel - wish they'd sell standard spool depths in addition to their 'D' spools on the models I'd be interested in. And what's with the super speed reels - I don't need 36IPT on a 2500 spinning reel - that's faster than my fastest casting reel...bring back the 5 ratios on the larger reels. 1 Quote

That's odd, I am in Ontario and picked it up in store earlier this year. Quote

I was shocked several years ago when I discovered decent quality reels now coming without them. It was a little odd to me at first, but I've gotten used to it now. Quote

Eric 26 Posted September 2, 2023 Posted September 2, 2023 I’m going to chime with I have a 13 fishing Creed LTE I bought a few years ago on clearance and it’s been a great reel with none of the problems that I read about in the reviews for the reel. For what it’s worth I have it on a 13 fishing med light rod paired with 8 lb J-braid. I purchased a Stradic this past spring and I was comparing the Miravel and Stradic side by side. In the end I’m glad I purchased the Stradic. Quote

Drag should be set to 1/3-1/2 of line test - so if you're running 8# test, you should be able to pull line out at 3#-4# of tension. 1 Quote
