I'm considering treating myself again and buying a Shimano Miravel (3,000 size). The 7.2 oz weight appeals to me. Does anyone here own one who would comment on what they think of it? Are they nice and smooth to reel?

This is about $180 cad, which is about as much as I'd like to spend on a reel.

I also considered a cheaper 13 Fishing C-reed GT (I don't know why the forum censored this without the dash). My father has one. It's fairly light (7.4oz), very smooth, and $50 cad cheaper than the Miravel.

I MIGHT consider a Shimano Stradic, maybe. They're heavier, does the long stroke spool make it worth the extra weight?

As a rule I don’t go with Suhimano but I did slip a 2500 Maribel in the team.  It’s a fine reel and worth it’s asking price. Fished nicely.

And I'm not necessarily dead set on Shimano. Is there a better reel within the price range?

Stradic would be my choice, Miravel is a fine reel but Stradic is in the sweet spot in terms of features and build quality IMO. FL are on sale right now on TW.

I'm sure Daiwa would offer something really close, not sure which one since I don't own any Daiwa but it's always been a competition thing between these two company.

I would say the Miravel would be hard to beat.

Shimano Spheros SW is the best domestically available reel in the $120ish range. It's the cheapest of Shimano's worm gear spinning reels which helps a lot with line lay.

Miravel offers light weight but still uses old school oscillation

I agree 100% if the OP don't mind the weight difference.

I've looked at them and like them. I don't own one just yet, but by all reports it's a nice reel.

I have both a Miravel 3000 and a Stradic FL 2500. Both are worth their price and fish fine. The Stradic is noticeably higher quality in all aspects.

The weight issue is subjective to the rod you are putting it on as well as your preferences for balance. I had the Miravel on a 7'7 Phenix Feather. The rod is very light but also a little tip heavy because of the length. The light Miravel didnt help balance it out. The Stradic felt much better on that rod and my old Symetre FJ (9oz+) feels even better than that.

The Stradic balances perfect on a 7ft Expride and I would think the Miravel would do the same, since that rod was not tip heavy, or at least not as much as the Feather. I sold the Expride before I could try the Miravel on it.

The Daiwa contender to the Miravel would be the Fuego.  Never touched a Miravel, but on paper they are probably the better reel, but Im very fond of my Fuegos after beating them the way I did.  When you go up to the Stradic Daiwa contender is the Procyon AL which feels great in hand, but its no Stradic.  While the line managment of the Daiwas are good the Stradics line managment is just unmatched at the price point.  You can get that worm gear in Spheros, but that is the heaviest 2ozs you will ever feel.  I like my Spheros for my long Suzuki inshore rods and MH inshore rods.  Think of the Spheros as a far more refined BG, but not quite as refined a Saltist BB. (extremely underrated reel)

I really like my Daiwa Fuego CT (baitcaster). I can cast unweighted plastic worms on it, using 35 lb braid, a reasonable distance.

Odd that the prices are so low. The miravel is something like $185 cad. And that site, with exchange I think was around $70 cad

The size 3000 wasn’t listed but serveral Asian Sites have excellent reputations and 50% less isn’t that unusual, plus very fast delivery.

Check them out, very popular.

they had the 3000 this morning. this link below is the versions that arent clearance. still cheaper than usa prices

there is also this place. i ordered from them on tuesday and it shipped last night. it hasnt arrived yet but i read very good things

the one thing to keep in mind, they are jdm versions, so there is not a warranty outside of japan. i have never needed to warranty anything in my life, so i never worried about that.

Shimano Vamford 2500 is $178 used on Didiraka.

Convert Canadian dollar to Yen: 26,000 Yen.

Given that I've had reels that are very smooth, with great line lay, and are fairly light, I wonder if I'd notice/appreciate any differences by buying an expensive reel. My old Daiwa Revros is only 7.4 oz, 4+1 ball bearing but is very smooth, and has good line lay. I bought it in a combo at Canadian Tire for only about $80 ($60 usd).

What things might I observe with a more expensive reel, given that I've been quite happy with reels that are under $50 usd?

I did have a KastKing baitcaster that I paid around $60 for, and when I upgraded to a Daiwa Fuego CT baitcaster it was a night and day difference. As long as I set the brakes reasonable on the Daiwa it very rarely gets a birds nest (even when it's windy), whereas the KastKing wasn't nearly so nice. But with my cheap spinning reels I'm not really observing any issues with them before an upgrade.

Make sure you like reels without anti reverse switches.
