Super User Mobasser Posted August 31, 2023 Super User Posted August 31, 2023 I've gained access to a nice farm pond close to home.I plan on fishing this pond in the evenings, with an old Heddon fly rod my dad bought in the early 1960s. It's been thirty years since I did any fly fishing for bass. My questions for the fly rod men here: The rod is an 8ft glass rod. The reel is a single action made by Pflueger. Both rod and reel are in good working condition. Ive bought a new weight forward 8 wt line. I plan on using a short leader of 5 to 6ft. To start out, I'm using a level leader. I can order some tapered leaders later. I'll be using popping bugs. Mine are deer hair bugs, in various colors. I have a couple of hard cork bugs, but I remember these being harder to cast. This is something I've been wanting to try again for a while now. Now, I've got a good pond to explore. As a side note, on the bottom of the cardboard rod tube that came with this rod, is a worn sticker that shows what my dad paid for this fly rod in the early 1960s. It says 14.95. Does this setup sound like it will work well, for bass bugging a farm pond? 3 Quote
Super User Solution bulldog1935 Posted September 1, 2023 Super User Solution Posted September 1, 2023 Hi friend, that's a jewel of a rod. I'm not sure you have a question there - go rip their lips. If you want to get down, instead of weighted flies, consider hunting a spare spool, and add a Teeny T200 spliced shooting head. I sight-fished this endemic bass 6' deep in a tannin plunge pool. Super User GetFishorDieTryin Posted September 1, 2023 Super User Posted September 1, 2023 It will be fine. I use a 7' 3wt Cortland with a Mr Pop 3.5 I got when I was 12 and have a blast fishing little poppers, it makes a 2lb feel like an Albie lol. 1 Quote
