Hello all,

I just put for the first time braided line on my pole. I bought 15lb braided line and a 10lb leader of fluorocarbon. I was trying to tie this FG knot and realized that its not going to work with that small of line. Is there a knot that people recommend for attaching leader to line when using 15lb braid to 10lb fluorocarbon?

I use uni to uni, but I believe the FG should work with that size line.
lots of options.

I am running 10 lb yellow power pro on all my spinning rods. Mix between 8lb and 10lb fluoro.

I use the Alberto knot. Works well for me.

I use 10lb braid with mono leaders of 10lb to 20lb all using back to back uni knots without any problems.

FG is killer with those lines.  it's tiny.  having said that, i kinda just use the Alberto.  which is also friggen small.

I have 15# braid to 10# FC leader on one of my spinning rods and use uni-to-uni knot.

3 wraps on FC knot and 5-6 wraps for braid knot. Gets the knots about the same size and it doesn’t fail.

I've had uni to uni connections fail. I've used a triple surgeon's knot with great results linking 8# leader to 10-15# braid. It's a very simple knot that holds well. Learned it when fly fishing.

Albright knot for me. Another plus when needed is that it works in all cases but also  in cases when the diameter of the lines are not similar.

The albright knot works well for me, too (usually 10# braid to 6-8# nylon or FC). The uni-uni does not work as well with FC, IMO, and it's a thicker knot. The FG knot is a bit fussy for those diameters--not sure it offers a significant advantage for the effort.

I also use the surgeon knot, but for tippet connections (mono to mono) on fly rods. It works as long as the line diameters are not too different.

The world of fishing knots when it comes to Fluorocarbon line is amazing and growing daily.

The simple blood knot joins all sizes and types  of line together and been around for decades. Like all knot the blood knot needs to be tied correctly.

Another old timer that works good is the Lefty Kreh leader knot, now called the Seaguar knot.

Alberto, Albright, are similar and can be tied on the water.

Double Uni knot is popular simple to tie.

I can’t tie the FG knot on the water so will not use any knot that can’t be tied correctly while fishing.

Go online and watch the videos step by step and practice.

we all have our favorite knots.  i try not to inject my opinions much on the matter, beyond suggestions.

the knot we tie the best really should be our lead-off conections anyways.  go with what you are great at.

I use the RP knot (very similar to alberto) for all connections of braid to mono/flouro. Its very easy and quick. The knot is especially small with 6-7 turns on 10 and 15lb braid to 10lb nylon.

Finesse application for me are the FG knot. Once you can tie it reliably that is, and for some folks that's a different knot.

The FG will work at that size if you can tie it.  I can't unless I'm sitting at home.  The alberto has been far better for me and I don't think I've had one pop on me.  I had a lot of problems with a double uni.  One day I sat here at my desk and must have tied it 10 times and every time it broke on a hard pull.  Needless to say it didn't get to the water.  I've been successful with the double uni before, but its hit or miss.  The alberto has become my go to.

Why is the FG not working?  I just tied some 15# 832 to a 10# Yo Zuri Top Knot fluoro leader yesterday, and I've been using that setup for years without issue.  I've only had it fail on me once, and that was when I was trying to break my line after getting snagged from the bank.  Usually, it breaks at the lure knot, but this one time, I actually broke at the leader connecting knot.  Still, no complaints, as I had to pull pretty hard to get it to break.

FG knot works great with 15lb braid and 10lb leader. I have that exact setup on several rods. FG knot works great down to about 6lb leader. I know from experience.

One tip, pull tighter when tying the first overhand knot after you do all your loops. That sets the knot.

It is my opinion that the FG, designed for heavy salt leaders , works best with heavy salt leaders.  As you can see, many make it work with the light stuff, but it's a pain for most of us.  You don't need its size advantage when using braids of 15 pound test or less and leaders of 15 or less.  The Alberto, (and even the double uni with most guides) will work just fine.

I add a tightly set half hitch to the braid tag end for added security.  I've had some Albertos which I thought were tied right unravel.

Always a good idea for just about any knot.  Also, you can melt it with a lighter or something to put a ball on the end so it doesn't pull through and unravel.  Though, you have to be careful not to melt the rest of the knot.

Lighters are a bit problematic in the wind.  I would trust the knot better without exposing it to a lighter. I get the superglue and extra half hitches, but no on the lighter.
