MontclairDave Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 If you got a gift certificate for $125 but had to spend it on just one lure, what would you get? For me, it’d be a PB Rat because I’ve caught 3 of my top 5 bass on the Spro Rat, and I’ve heard the action on the PB Rat is a lot better at slow speeds. But god the pucker factor when throwing a $125 lure, I can’t even imagine. I’m sure there are swimbait addicts who think $125 is a bargain… 1 Quote
Pat Brown Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 That one in particular seems worth it. I'm less concerned about topwaters. I have lost maybe 3 ever. 1 Quote
thediscochef Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 It would have to be topwater or it would never get fished effectively in my hands lol 1 Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted August 27, 2023 Super User Posted August 27, 2023 PB rat as well. I wouldn’t have to buy a new rod, like some of those glidebaits require. Quote
Super User LrgmouthShad Posted August 27, 2023 Super User Posted August 27, 2023 Gosh okay I guess I’ll play along. I remember being mildly intrigued by Mattlures Hardgill Swimbaits. Retails for around $85 I think. Quote
Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted August 27, 2023 Super User Posted August 27, 2023 The rush of chunking a $175 bait that can't replaced that took months to get, and then landing a monster on it is unlike anything I've ever experienced in fishing. Don't hesitate to spend your money on the premium high big baits. They cost for a reason, and the good ones have epic track records of catching trophy caliber fish. 2 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted August 27, 2023 Super User Posted August 27, 2023 I'd see if I could return the gift certificate for cash. 3 Quote
Captain Phil Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 $125 for a bass bait! Hard to imagine. The most I ever spent was $20 for some Japanese wonder lure. I have spent way more than that for a collector lure, but it's not for fishing. 2 Quote

The good thing about $175 lures is that you'll fish the thing to death or lose it trying. I'll buy $20-30 of Chatterbaits randomly on sale, and might never use them. 1 Quote

akmac Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 My PB came on a $3 generic Norman "rattle trap" that would whorl in circles if you tried to burn it. You could buy 41 of them:) 6 Quote

The giver wanted me to have something nice. Not use it to pay electric bill. id honor their wishes. I would like to change my answer. I don’t think a rat would pull a big bass in my area. I need a swimbait. I’d go with a Tiny Klash or something that closely resembles a Hitch Minnow. 1 Quote

Tie good knots and check your line often so you don't get broken off on the hookset. Don't wing it into a tree top, and you'll be fine. The PB is a floater. I don't know anyone who's lost a floater fishing from a boat or yak. Git one. 3 Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted August 27, 2023 Super User Posted August 27, 2023 Take a look at Mike Bucca’s baits. They really produce. Available in 5” to 9” and are priced as low as $59. I caught a nice bass on the 6” segmented shad first cast. It always produces for me. 3 Quote

Trick is $175, and I think the Bull Glide is even more. Quote
Super User LrgmouthShad Posted August 27, 2023 Super User Posted August 27, 2023 When researching to try to answer this question, I stumbled on the 3:16 Workhorse Glide. Retails for something like $275 but I bet it works. Sounds like they are incredibly hard to get a hold of too Quote

There are about a dozen big bait makers that sell baits for $100-300, and sell out every drop within a minute or two. Some drops for things like Chad Shads go in 10-20secs. The high of actually "winning" a bait you've been trying to get is almost like fishing itself. They're the crack rock of Bass fishing imho. Quote
Captain Phil Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 My PB came on a Gambler Craw. Can't remember what I paid, but I'm sure it was only a few cents. $175 a bait kind of sounds like a gambling problem. I think there is a website for that. ? 4 2 Quote

Super User Dwight Hottle Posted August 27, 2023 Super User Posted August 27, 2023 https://bullshad.com/collections/all Here you go. You could get two of these for $125. The $170 bait is basically unobtainable as it sells out faster than you can buy it when’s it drops. Quote
looking45 Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 Search eBay for Hinkle swim baits if you think $125 is expensive Quote
Super User T-Billy Posted August 27, 2023 Super User Posted August 27, 2023 Yeah....... Not in the waters I fish. I had a muskie get my chatterbait and 8" leader the other night. No point buying an expensive finely tuned swimbait that's just going to get mangled or bit off. 4 Quote
Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted August 27, 2023 Super User Posted August 27, 2023 Here's a quick list of some of the most sought after $125+ lures that I've found KGB- anything Phoney Frog- anything Hinkle- anything 86 baits- anything HPH- anything 3:16 - most of their stuff Bucca Trick Shad/Bull Shad These are just the Glides and Swimmers that I'm into. There is an equal amount of companies and baits that are in the wake/rat/crank down category. 3 minutes ago, T-Billy said: Yeah....... Not in the waters I fish. Yeah I'd have trouble throwing even Jackhammers around ESOX fish. Heavy leader would kill the action on most glides anyways. 2 Quote
