Bazoo Posted August 22, 2023 Posted August 22, 2023 I seen this soft silicone toy, and my first thought was "bird bait!" I rigged it with a 4/0 EWG hook. It's dang tough and I think it'll hold up if I do catch fish on it. I plan to use a hook to run the line from the front of the beak into the opening in the head and tie onto the hook. I figure the opening would be just about right for a split shot, if I need weight. It's just about weightless as is, and the hook acts as a keel to keep the bird upright. So how does everyone reckon it'll work? 1 Quote
bloom Posted August 22, 2023 Posted August 22, 2023 Who cares what we think, go find out if the bass are impressed. I think it is a clever idea and would give it a try, if nothing else it would be fun to see the look on my fishing buddies faces. 1 Quote
Pat Brown Posted August 22, 2023 Posted August 22, 2023 I would fully expose the hook. Don't want to risk the plastic bunching up on the hookset. 1 Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted August 22, 2023 Super User Posted August 22, 2023 The hard part will be finding a toy bird specific rod and reel to use with it. ? If it works I hope you have a reliable supply of them. 4 Quote
Skunkmaster-k Posted August 22, 2023 Posted August 22, 2023 Looks like a dinosaur bird. Tera-something. 1 Quote

Super User GreenPig Posted August 22, 2023 Super User Posted August 22, 2023 Try it. A frog hook might sit great over those wings. 1 Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted August 22, 2023 Super User Posted August 22, 2023 i guess that could be called a bird. looks like a pterodactyl. Quote

Bazoo Posted August 22, 2023 Author Posted August 22, 2023 Interesting thoughts on it, thanks everyone. If it does do well, then my only problem will be continued supply of them. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted August 22, 2023 Super User Posted August 22, 2023 @Bazoo I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Keep us posted. @Darth-Baiter I believe @MN Fisheris correct. The crest on the dinosaur’s head suggests it is likely a pteranodon. MN is not only a science master but also a karate master in street fighter, lol. Fishingstickman Posted August 22, 2023 Posted August 22, 2023 I would paint that joker black with a red belly and throw it back in the willows or right on thick pads and hang on. If you could get a wide gap with a screw in bait keeper and get it to stick in that chickens beak it would help keep it from bunching up. When I was a kid in the 70s we would shoot black birds out of trees around stock ponds, when they hit the water giant bullfrogs or little gators grabbed them. If the birds were nesting and there were hundreds of them in the trees, the bass would stack up under the pads and absolutely crush them. I wish they would have had black frogs and braid back then, we never tried to sling a blackbird on our Zepco 33s 1 Quote

Bazoo Posted August 23, 2023 Author Posted August 23, 2023 Very interesting replies, thanks all. I tried fishing it yesterday, but nothing was working where I was at. Quote

Super User MIbassyaker Posted August 24, 2023 Super User Posted August 24, 2023 It doesn't float, does it? If so, you could try a "Walk-The-(pterano)Don" retrieve... 1 Quote
Bazoo Posted August 24, 2023 Author Posted August 24, 2023 It does float... I was flopping it pretty good under the tree line I was at... thinking it would look like a bird that had fallen out of a nest/tree. Quote
Bazoo Posted September 9, 2023 Author Posted September 9, 2023 Figure I'd give an update. I didn't fish this but once, and not for very long. Then I put it in a compartment with some other soft baits, like my catch all spot for worms and lizards and such that I've used, and the other worms melted it so badly it wasn't usable any longer. bloom Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 dangit, I'm sorry to hear that. I was hoping to see a picture of a big bass with a toy bird in it's mouth. Quote
