Looking for a cheap-ish rod for fishing around heavy grass and vegetation with heavy braid (I'm thinking 50 or 65 will easily accomplish this purpose?) while I'm doing high school tournaments. I found the DC 734C and have been told it's a good budget option for these techniques and line, but the Dobyn's site doesn't list "Swim Jigs" or "Frogs" as a viable application unlike they do with other Heavy rods. Also, the rod is only rated 10-20lb test/1/4-1oz lures, which is the same as other medium heavies. So I'm just wondering if anyone just so happens to use this rod for heavy applications or if it sounds like it could even pull it off, as I have never fished frogs/swim jigs with heavy line before. If anyone has recommendations for frog rods under $70, that would help alot. Thanks!

I consider Dobyns 4 power rods Medium Heavy. I use a Champ 735 for frogs in light to medium vegetation. I really think you’ll want a 5 power (735) but you’ll have to step up to a Maverick.

You’ll probably get plenty of good suggestions and Labor Day sales are right around the corner.

Call Dobyns 1 (903) 919-8028. They’ll be happy to talk to you and their advice is sound in my experience.

I like Dobyns and have a bunch, but if you are looking at options around the price of Colts, and AREN'T limiting it to Dobyns, you might check out the Daiwa Aird-X.

I believe they typically run around $50 and though I don't have the heavy model,... I do like the lighter ones I have tried and have also heard good things about their Heavy action.

MSRP is $55 for the Aird-X - sometimes you can find them for $45

I have a 7' H/F which is my frog rod, Fuego CT-XS with 50# 832...does quite well tossing frogs actually...I'm not sure if I'm gonna upgrade it or not right now.

I use a Dobyns Sierra 735 for frogs and 50 lb. braid . The entire Sierra series rods are slightly slower - however if using braid it's a great combination for casting and providing just an extra split second on my jack rabbit hook sets .

That was one of my considerations. I'll just wait to see what goes on sale around labor day.

Dobyns Colt 704c is on clearance at Academy Sports for less than 50 bucks.

That's what I was thinking about. I just want to know If it will even handle 50lb braid. I've never snapped a rod and am not looking forward to doing so.

Since my Aird-X H/F handles 50# 832 with no issue, I don't see a problem...if it doesn't, then it's not worth the price even at discount.

You will probably want a 5 power in the dobyns line up for your intended purposes.  Go with the 735 in whatever series you can afford.  You can also check out the used section for them online at ALF.
