Super User LrgmouthShad Posted August 20, 2023 Super User Posted August 20, 2023 Steve Kennedy made a statement on Mercer that he and his Dad used to buy a certain crankbait 144 at a time and of those, 2-3 would be magic baits. He also said the same thing can occur with plastic baits. - The Bait Monkey 2 Quote

I have a pack of Dingers that I think are factory seconds. They are deformed , the slot crooked on some of them and they are line twisting punks. Thats the only pack of Dingers I have had like that .Oh well , they can still be used as neds . Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted August 20, 2023 Super User Posted August 20, 2023 I can see buying a dozen at a time to get 2 or 3 magical baits but a gross, I don't think so. 2 Quote
Super User LrgmouthShad Posted August 20, 2023 Author Super User Posted August 20, 2023 @Dwight Hottle I agree. Thought it is absurd but interesting nonetheless 1 Quote
Scott804 Posted August 20, 2023 Posted August 20, 2023 Jacob Wheeler and Dustin Connell have a few clips talking about this too. No two baits are the same! Hold onto them lucky crankbaits. Quote
garroyo130 Posted August 20, 2023 Posted August 20, 2023 How long does it take to fish 144 to find the magic ones??? By that time, conditions have likely changed ... 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 20, 2023 Super User Posted August 20, 2023 The few hundred crankbaits I sold 3 years ago to BR members on the Flea Market forum where mostly hand picked “pet” lures that caught bass. To test a crank bait troll it in areas where you know bass are located. It doesn't take but a few hours to determine the lemons from pearls. Tom 1 Quote
Bazoo Posted August 20, 2023 Posted August 20, 2023 This is new to me. I'm interested in reading / hearing about these tests. Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 21, 2023 Super User Posted August 21, 2023 When you troll a deep diving crank bait the lure stays down at the depth it’s designed for the entire distance you troll in lieu of just a few yard making long casts. By trolling you cover the entire strike zone for hundreds of yards in lieu of a few. Lets say you know where bass are located and what depth they are active in. I use sonar to find these bass and years of experience. I buy 6 each of a specific crank bait same size and color. I use snaps for attaching crank baits and 1st step is let out a few yards of line at slow walking speed and watch the lures action at the speed and adjust it to optimize the action. Next make cast about 100’ and start your trolling pass at a specific depth the bass are located and the lures running depth. Most if not all crank bait don’t dive to their advertised depth, but you will know when or if it hits bottom where you are trolling. I trolled in a lazy S pattern to cover more depth and change the lures pace and action. Troll a few hundred yards with a lure and if you catch a bass that lure goes into the keeper box. I usually run 2 paths up wind the down wind with each lure. Change to the next lure and repeat the 2 paths culling lures that din’t get a strike. I also make a pass with a known “pet” bass catching lure for a base line. Next I move to another area in the same lake repeating the entire process. It’s amazing how the good “pet” lures stand out when testing and over years of fishing. Tom PS, what happens to the lemons? Today it’s called eBay. Back in the dark ages it was called a parking lot sale. 3 2 Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted August 21, 2023 Super User Posted August 21, 2023 I read an article with Edwin Evers regarding balsa crankbaits and he rated their actions and marked them AAA, AA, and A grades. He’s pretty picky. 1 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted August 21, 2023 Super User Posted August 21, 2023 In my life I have I had just a few cranks with the right stuff. Today I just have one that I feel is a superior bait. I might have more but cranks have not got a lot of playing time the past several years. Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted August 21, 2023 Super User Posted August 21, 2023 You can tune a piano but you can’t tune a fish. Same goes for cranks. IYKYK.? 1 1 Quote
txchaser Posted August 22, 2023 Posted August 22, 2023 I have a crank that two of my three largest fish were caught on. It split in the sun. 1 2 1 Quote
