VolsnFishin Posted August 20, 2023 Posted August 20, 2023 So I have looked on the forum and see a lot of recommendations for the St. Croix Mojo Bass and the bass x. I am leaning towards these, both in spinning rods. I have a combo rod/reel that is the Pflueger presidential 6'6 medium. I have already bought a new reel I am using on the Pflueger that is a Shimano Nasci 3000. I am thinking of getting the 7'1 I just can't decide wether to get mh or medium. If I already have a 6'6 rod in medium, would it make more sense to get a MH? As of right now all I am doing is bank fishing. I've been using drop shot, t-rig, shallow and medium diving crank baits and a few jigs. I just bought some chatter baits and spinner baits this evening. I feel that getting another medium rod, I will have two of the same and if I had a little different rods by getting a MH, I could rig them a little different and not have to change and retie to use different lures and stuff. Any suggestion would be appreciated. I could also go with different rods. I would like to stay in the >$120 range for my first true rod. Thanks in advance. Quote

PaulVE64 Posted August 20, 2023 Posted August 20, 2023 For bank fishing i assume you'll be staying in water under 15' and throwing lures under 3/8 oz. I dont see a MH spinning rod that starts at 3/8oz being of any great use. If the pfleuger rod is a med/fast get a med/medium Or drop down to a MLF 1 Quote
Pogues2300 Posted August 20, 2023 Posted August 20, 2023 The first rod I bought when I got back into bass fishing was the last generation 7’1” mojo bass spinning. Great rod zero issues… it has been gifted and still going strong. I personally think that would be a good choice, you are bank fishing the extra length will give you a bit more casting distance. Or bump it up to a tatula elite for an extra 20$. Good luck! Quote

GetFishorDieTryin Posted August 20, 2023 Posted August 20, 2023 There were some issues with the reel seats. I dont know if its more prevalent in the spinning or casting rods, I would suspect casting but not sure. The spinning rod grips dont look great, but after handling one, I think I might try to have my next custom rod built with a similar fore grip. The blanks themselves feel really good and are fairly light. If SC can straighten out the issues the BassX would be one of the better rods at the price point. Quote

Based on my experience on doing a lot of bank fishing and kind of been in the same situation about setup as far as spinning gear, I've decided to try a MH spinning rod and I'm glad I did cause now I can use more heavier lures that I could not use with my medium spinning rod, generally a MH spinning rod is not the same as MH casting rod, is more like a M casting rod. Getting another medium rod IMO would be counterproductive based on the lures you've mentioned. 7' SLX MH spinning rod for $99.99 would be a good choice if you don't mind the EVA handle IMHO. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 20, 2023 Global Moderator Posted August 20, 2023 Got out with one of the new Mojo spinning rods this morning. Felt really nice, no complaints and no issues with the reel seat. 6 Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted August 20, 2023 BassResource.com Administrator Posted August 20, 2023 I was surprised to discover it's actually easier to hold with the reel between the last two fingers instead of two in front and two in back. Note how my thumb rests comfortably on top of the handle (where it's flat). It feels custom. Reels seat seems solid and well-designed. 2 Quote
VolsnFishin Posted September 3, 2023 Author Posted September 3, 2023 So I completely went a different route. I ended up purchasing a Diawa Airdx MHF casting rod and a Lews speed spool LFS reel. I set it up and was practicing in the front yard with it today. That was super simple to set up. I can't wait to get it out on Tuesday. I thought for a first set up this would be a good one to try without breaking the bank. I saw a lot of people saying this rod was a winner for the price. Does anyone have any thoughts on the reel I selected? Quote
Dan N Posted September 3, 2023 Posted September 3, 2023 (edited) I recently purchased 2 of the Lews LFS reels for crankbait rods, as I already had 1 and was impressed with the casting distance I was getting. Also they were pretty cheap on sale. Not sure how they will last in the long run, but I’m happy with mine. I should also mention I usually don’t have issues with backlashes, I grew up using my thumb. And part the reason I bought them is they offer a slow, 5.6 gear ratio which I prefer . no complaints, but not a ton of use yet. Edited September 3, 2023 by Dan N 1 Quote
