Striper9 Posted August 18, 2023 Posted August 18, 2023 What size ewg do you guys use for these? Quote
Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted August 18, 2023 Super User Posted August 18, 2023 3/0 would be my pick. Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted August 18, 2023 Super User Posted August 18, 2023 i know you are asking about EWG, but i have gone to a 3/0 (and up to) 4/0 straight shank with the bait keeper loop thing. But EWG, i do use a 3/0 when i did. 1 Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted August 18, 2023 Super User Posted August 18, 2023 I’m not sure what you mean by “Power Worm” but with most 7” plastics, I use a 4.0 or 5.0 EWG. Quote

Fishingmickey Posted August 18, 2023 Posted August 18, 2023 Howdy "9", For me it depends on the thickness of the worm. That dictates the EWG hook size. Something like a skinny Zoom 7" finesse or 7" Robo worm would be a 2/0 or 3/0 EWG, A medium thick worm like a 7" Berkley power worm, 4/0 EWG. Say a really fat 7" stick bait like a Berkley General, Yamamoto Senko, Strike King Ocho could take a 5/0 or 6/0. I feel like the important thing to remember when using a EWG type hook is having enough gap between the bend of the hook (between the eye and the point) and the plastic. A short fat swim bait like a Zako or Keitech swing impact fat need that gap for the plastic to be pushed down and that gap helps the hook point become more exposed when a fish bites your bait. Also take those hook sizes as a general guide line. Different manufactures hooks may say the same size on the package but in reality they are not the same size. I find when searching for a particular hook for a specific bait. I'll take the package of plastics and hold it against a package of hooks to get an idea of the "fit". Too long, impedes the action, too short means maybe not getting the fish in the mouth, Again IMHO matching the correct size and style of hook to the bait is very important. I know TLDR, but I didn't just want to throw a hook size out and hope it stuck for you. Regards, Fishingmickey 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted August 18, 2023 Super User Posted August 18, 2023 I fish a 3/0 as well. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted August 19, 2023 Super User Posted August 19, 2023 I use a 3/0 EWG but my fishing buddy, that is too stubborn to change, fishes a 2/0 offset shank hook. He misses fish with it constantly. I will watch his rod bend and he will say "I missed it. I couldn't catch up to it." He broke off one day and I switched him over to a 3/0 EWG. He then had a great day after that. I told him it was the hook. He immediately cut it off and put his favorite hook on and went back to missing fish our next trip. Drives me crazy. On a side note, I use a 3/0 Owner Cover Shot that I skin hook with 7in Power Worm and Zoom U-Tail Worm. It works great when fish just want to nip at it. 1 Quote
Super User Munkin Posted August 19, 2023 Super User Posted August 19, 2023 Generally a 4/0 offset worm hook. Allen Quote
