Rora Posted August 18, 2023 Posted August 18, 2023 Hey all. I was out fishing mid morning and I noticed some of the larger bass were digging themselves into the grass and it looked it was almost trying to forage for something. This was super shallow and there is no separation between grass the bottom. What do you think they were trying to eat? Also what would you recommend I throw? Jigs? Ned rig? thanks in advance 2 Quote
MGF Posted August 18, 2023 Posted August 18, 2023 There could have been crayfish or pan fish in the weeds that would interest bass. I've seen bass in shallow heavy weeds and when they moved it looked like they were chasing bluegills or something...the kind of situation where you might throw a floating frog. Are you sure they weren't carp? 2 Quote
Super User Catt Posted August 18, 2023 Super User Posted August 18, 2023 Mudbugs, crawdads, crayfish, crawfish...pick one. Quote
GRiver Posted August 18, 2023 Posted August 18, 2023 I have fished eel grass, where it went from bottom to the surface. Working plastic worms through it, slowly bouncing and letting it sink a bit. I use as little of weight as I can get away with. I would bring it up to the surface, pull it along the top of the grass, for a couple of feet. Let it sink again, you have to watch your line constantly, because of the slack you give it to sink straight down. Quote

Are you sure they weren't carp? It was shallow and in clear water. Just thought they didn’t really like to dig their head into grass silt and algae but that’s what I saw them doing. figured I would try a Ned rig next. Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 18, 2023 Super User Posted August 18, 2023 A group of big fish digging into grass kicking mud sounds more like carp behavior. Lots of critters live in aquatic plants from Young of the year fish of all types, crayfish/crawdads, insect larvae etc. Ned rig may have too light of line to control a big bass or carp in the grass.
