Go JDM - get yourself a Miravel for $103/$112 (depending on size). I have the 2500 and 1000, and so far they've been very good...lighter than the Nasci by enough to notice.

The BG is a great reel, but it is heavier than most others you will find in the price range.

^^  Agreed,.... I have a BG 3000 and some 2500 and 3000 Fuego LTs. The BG is a nice reel, but it weighs more than 10.5oz compared to the Fuego at just over 7oz

I know 3 oz isn't a lot, but a nearly 50% increase in weight is noticeable. I run the Fuegos on my lighter rods and put the heavier BG on a more tip heavy rod to try to balance it out better.

I do like the Daiwa spinning reels in that price area! Though once you get above that, I found myself switching brands and taking advantage of good deals on Stradics and Vanfords.

I have been using Daiwa BG spinning reels for as long as they have been making them.  I use them in both fresh and salt water fishing for everything from bass to tarpon.  They are great reels that don't cost a lot. They are smooth, have great drags and are easy to service. The old BG13 reels I use for bass fishing work as good today as when I bought them twenty years ago.  You can pay more, but you won't get more.

Looking at a new spinning reel. Wanna keep at $100 I’ve narrowed it down to the Shimano nasci and the Daiwa bg 2500. What would you choose and why?

I have both of these reels.

The Nasci is smoother but after a month of use it needed cleaning to remain smooth.

The BG is heavier but is bulletproof.

Both good reels but I prefer the BG

The Nasci FC is amazing. Because of the screw in handle design it is a massive jump over the older model.

it is butter smooth and casts amazingly. I  have the 1000 size.

If an anti reverse switch is something you like, check for it.  Many companies are eliminating them.

What will you be using the reel for?

That would determine which reel to choose.

i think once you determine the size..in this case a 2500 series reel, that's it.  i dont find a lot of techique specific advantages or disavantages across spinner reel choices.   maybe weight.  just me, but i am not super sophisticated in the spinning side of my house.

The most important component in a spinning reel is the drag, it must operate flawlessly. Weight, bail roller and then drive train. Good choices are available near the $100 price point.

How the reel balances on your rod is important and weigh can affect balance.

Speaking of drag, I believe BG is the only reel around $100 that has a bearing-supported drag. If you don't mind the weight, best value reel in its class. Daiwa don't make much money on this one.

Fuego has it.  The extra support is nice, but for most FW its not a huge advantage.  Its kind of like Magseal its nice to have, but for a lot of situations you can get by fine without in FW.  I could possibly see smallmouth wanting that extra support, but I think a bearing in the roller would make a bigger difference IMO.

I would buy a Fuego or a Miravel over a BG or Nasci.  It may not sound like it, but 1oz or 2 off the total weight makes a big difference.  A lighter outfit will give you the sensation of higher sensitivity.  BGs a great reel, but since the price increase its not in same price point of the Spheros.  The Spheros SW beats a BG in every significant category IMO.  Spheros SW is pretty much a stradic fk, its incredibly smooth, outstanding line management and more protection from water ingress.  Daiwa makes a good zinc gear, but IDC how good it is, IMO AL is superior to Zinc and thats what you get with Spheros.  The only drawback to Spheros is they only make them in a 3000 and 4000.

I went with the bg2500

Good move. Service it occasionally and your grandchildren will be fishing with it after you're gone.

Yup I come from a saltwater background and they’re heavily used around these parts
