Casual Excise/Use Tax Change:

If you purchase an outboard motor as a single unit, the casual excise tax is calculated at 5% with a $500.00 cap.

The casual excise tax rate has not changed for a watercraft or watercraft/outboard motor purchased as a unit. The casual excise tax rate for a watercraft or watercraft and outboard motor purchased as a unit is 5% with a $500.00 cap.

Disclaimer: I'm from North Carolina but I'm less than a mile from SC.

 

I "think" you'll have to pay the DNR tax A-Jay listed when you register the boat but that would be a one time deal.  They yearly tax is county/city property tax.   The rate is going to vary from location to location.   For most locations it would be the same rate as property taxes on real estate.  You can probably find the rate by going to the tax administration web site for the county you're planning to move to.  They will put a value on your boat.

Welcome to the forum.  What part of SC are you moving to?  I'm in Grover NC, less than a mile from SC just off Interstate 85.

Then you always have to worry about how big of an idiot the local tax accessor is.  I live on the other side of the Savanah River in Ga, and I'm doing battle with the counties new tax accessor dreaming up her own ridiculous values.  Like a plain old 2005 Lowe 1436L with a 1973 9.9 Johnson and she says its' valued at $3,800, and a 2001 Pontoon boat with 90 Merc I bought for $1,500 that needs total restoration valued at $14,000, without the trailers because in GA, the trailers are tax through DOT when you buy tags each year.  

I got the notice for the Lowe first and asked her where she came up with such a stupid value and told her she could stick it where the sun don't shine.  She didn't even know in GA, a boat valued under $7,501 was not taxable.  Well, a couple of weeks later I get the one for the pontoon boat, I guess she figured she would make up for the one on the Lowe.  I'm still fighting that one.

In my state I challenged the market value of my home, I found out they have to show how the value was determined!!  When they finally come out with it, I had a ball tearing it apart in front of all the people waiting in line.  They couudn't prove anything and had nothing to compare value with.  They can't just use their opinion, they must have a reference for value.  Do your homework....
