badfish79 Posted August 3, 2023 Posted August 3, 2023 Anyone know if an MGL spool from a Curado MGL 150 or an SLX XT will fit in a Tranx 150? I'm trying to get more casting distance overall, especially with lures under 3/8oz. Quote
JN94 Posted August 3, 2023 Posted August 3, 2023 Unlikely if I had to bet. I own a few Tranxs and fish saltwater a good bit. I wouldn't take an MGL spool in the salt personally unless you are good with potentially destroying it. I have fished my Tranx with 10lb braid before and a M power rod and was able to sling 8g a long way. I don't go that low anymore (was really just an experiment), but you could put 20 on and still get solid distance. I use mostly 30 now with a M or MH rod and can throw 3/8oz plenty far. What rod/line setup have you been using? I really wish Shimano would come out with a 70 size Tranx and a lighter spool for throwing 5-8g range. That is the dream 1 Quote
badfish79 Posted August 3, 2023 Author Posted August 3, 2023 For some reason I thought the SLX XT had an MGL spool, but I was wrong. I also thought I read before that it was rated for saltwater, but that info does not show on the Shimano site anymore. I'm currently using the Tranx 150 on an NRX 843 with 30lb power pro. Mostly casting from shore for saltwater bass and halibut, so I want/need distance for those. I dont have an issue in fresh since I dont need to cast too far for green bass. I guess I can spool some 20lb on there and see if there's improvement, or just delegate this combo for lure packages that are 1/2oz and up. The Tournament MB with a Champ XP 703 (and sometimes 734) that I used to use primarily could easily outcast this Tranx 150/NRX combo, even with a 1/4oz jighead and plastic. I guess I will still have a need for that combo. I was hoping I could rely on the Tranx/NRX for everything. Quote
Hulkster Posted August 3, 2023 Posted August 3, 2023 One thing you may want to consider if you mainly fish from shore is to get longer rods, as long as possible. Over the last few years I have slowly been upgrading all my spinning and baitcasting rods to 7'6 and 7'5 inch rods. The difference in casting over the 7 foot versions is noticable. Loomis makes 7'6 and 7'5 models in several lines (IMX Pro NRX etc) Quote
badfish79 Posted August 3, 2023 Author Posted August 3, 2023 I'm really awkward casting anything over 7'3. I can only cast consistently (accurate and minimal backlash) with 7ft rods. Anything longer and the side casts feel weird and the overhead casts backlash often. I dont want to spend time and am probably too lazy to try to fix my casting mechanics, but maybe I should. Quote
Solution mrpao Posted August 3, 2023 Solution Posted August 3, 2023 The spools are not compatible between the different reels. The spool shafts are different. I think shimano designed them this way to keep people from just swapping spools. Instead, you have to buy another reel. SLX Mgl is top spool Curado 150 Mgl is middle. Tranx 150 spool on bottom 1 Quote
