Found a starter for the old Merc, and ordered new seats...

And wouldn't you know it...I found a new boat.

Actually used Lund Adventure. That is another story for another day.

What do you think my boat is worth?:

  • 1960 Rich Line 14'
  • 1974 Mercury 20hp two stroke (electric start)
  • Garmin Echomap 7SV up front
  • Garmin Striker 4CV in back
  • ProMariner 2 bank on-board charger
  • 40lb Minn Kota All-Terrain 12v
  • 12-way fuse block with rocker switch panel
  • Two deep cycle marine batteries
  • 3 gallon fuel cell
  • Bilge pump
  • Full navigation lights
  • Holds 6 rods
  • Aluminum framing, Baltic birch 9-ply decking coated with marine epoxy
  • No live-well
  • Good trailer with spare tire included
  • Oh, and two new seats : )

Here is the build thread:  Rich Line Update

As a baseline, you have a 60+ year old boat and a 50 year old motor, both on the smaller side.  With the trailer, you're looking at $1500-$2k for that.  You've got functional electronics and trolling motor, but nothing special that will entice a buyer.  The rest of the equipment are all hygiene factors that any buyer would expect to find in a boat.  I'd say its probably $2k-$2500 that you'll get out of it.  With the right buyer maybe $3k.  If you're in an area with not a lot of used boats and plenty of demand then $3k.  Its a good fishing setup for someone, you just need to find that someone.

I’m looking forward to that story on another day. Make sure you post photos in the “show your ride” thread.

I looked at this post and thought 3k. I like to set the price a little higher than what I am looking for and then when someone lowballs me it is just right LOL. 2x on what @gimruis said though! Keep us updated on the Lund

In my area ( great lakes, Ohio) probably not that much.  Depending on actual condition mabey 2K..when we put time, money and labor into a project, we often feel like it is worth more than it really is....

Bottom line is...it is only worth what someone is willing to pay !!  Good luck..

I'm in the 2k-2.5k ballpark for your rig. That's mainly based on the electronics, though older units (Echomap Plus, Striker Plus) will depreciate that. Also depends on what type of batteries (flooded, AGM, Gel-Cell) and how old. 3-gallon tank is pretty small, and no live-well is a downgrade for a 'decked rig'.

The right buyer maybe $2500, it’s not worth what your heart thinks and pride you put into it!

It's almost impossible for you not to have quite a bit of sentimental ties with your rig.

The work the sweat blood & tears that wending to getting & keeping it running.

But face it, it's a Very OLD rig.

I bet at lest half the folks that inquiry about the both were born at least 30 years before they laid that hull.  Replacement parts are a major concern for that motor.

And all that stuff that means so much to you, rarely mean ANYTHING to a prospective buyer.

Maybe more like nothing.

Owners selling them always fine out exactly what they are worth,

the day the sell.

Whatever some one is willing to pay, is what it's worth.

No more no less.

Well, probably less that what the seller that hoped he'd get for it.

my advice - take the first offer you get and be done with it.

Deep down you know you're not going to 'make any money.

If you hang on to it wait for some high ball sale price to come through,

It probably never will and you'll either end up giving it away or worse, paying some one to salvage it off your property.

How's that for a rosy out look ?

Good Luck.

Appreciate the words here! I would be ecstatic to get $2k out of it.

I posted on another site and got everything from $1,500 to $4,500 (which I think is insanely high!)

Amazingly, getting parts for the old Merc has not been a problem. I ordered OEM carb rebuild kit, impellers, and my mechanic found a lower unit re-rebuild kit pretty easily.

It has been a fun project for the past 23 years. Lots of great memories...and some frustration. I learned a lot building the decks and doing the "build."

Finalized the deal on the Lund today. I pick it up next Saturday. Pretty stoked!

And IMO, Made a fine choice as well.

Looking forward to pics from New Boat Day!

Had some time yesterday to work on the old Tin Boat...sealed up the bottom with 3M 5200, and looked at the electric starter set up I scored from eBay.

While it would be cool to have electric start, and say "I did that..." I quickly realized needed to abort that mission. Thought the starter would bolt right in...turns out I need to remove the pull start / upper of the motor...nope.

Didn' want to spend the time and energy messing with it. Thankfully I am within 30 day return window...messaged the seller, and he's going to issue me a refund on return.

So I fished the old boat one more time today. Managed 20.3 MPH top speed, fully loaded with all my tackle, two deep cycles, and gear. Most I've ever seen from this boat and motor was 23 MPH, that was before I added all the decking.  I'll take 20 MPH.

Caught two nice 2-1/2 lb. bass, a small 13", and one that measured 19" | 4lbs. 8 oz. Good times.

Spent some time running around the lake at full throttle.

I've owned the boat for 23 years. Lots of good memories.

Things I dislike:  leaks a little...nothing huge, just annoying. Only big enough to fish me...if I take anyone with me...it's tight and awkward. The old 2-stroke Merc loves to guzzle fuel...and the 3 gallon tank doesn't last long. A larger tank wouldn't fit in the space...so I managed. When it rains, my stuff gets really wet.

Things I really like: It's small, light weight and can get in places other boats cannot. The cable steer 40lb Minn Kota is easy to maneuver, and quick to change directions. I can drive without looking. It has been a relatively inexpensive boat. The Merc has been to the marine mechanic once time in the years I've owned it...replaced all the bottom end seals. I really like how I am able to lay 6 or 7 rods behind me on the decking...makes for quick switches. The old Merc takes about 4-5 pulls to start in the morning...after that it's one pull and she's fired and ready to roll!

Fished a lot with my Daughter, Dad, and brother in this boat. It will be missed. Looking forward to breaking in the Lund.

You got a good price, and the new owner got a good deal. Win-Win.

Agreed @Kirtley Howe! He looked it over pretty good, asked a few questions. I fired up the old Merc...it started on the third pull. Then re-started on first pull after that. Solid motor that served me well for 23 years.

He was stoked to have a fishing boat and was going to get it on the water tonight. Good for him!
