Solo fishing, what is the best way to take a picture of your catch?

I fish solo half of the time.  I've developed a system of putting camera on the ground or whatever may be available and setting a 5 second delay.  This often results in pictures that appear a bit straight armed.  I've tried the holding the fish next to me selfie but feel as if that can be more distorting than what I'm now doing.  Any of you have methods that work better?

I’ve been doing the long arm selfie thing more lately because it’s pretty straightforward with reasonably sized fish. With any big fish, I use my rod as a stand for the phone (on the ground) with a 10 second self timer. I’ve also brought a tiny tripod along a few times, as well as just taken video and selected the exact frame I wanted to use as the shot.

Good point on the video, I'll give it a try.  I'm a bit superstitious and feel the more gear I bring in order to document a big fish, the lower my chances of catching said big fish increase.  For example whenever I replace batteries in the scale I get skunked for a week.

I agree.  Problem is if I have the phone on the ground, holding the fish closer while trying to point it down is not that easy.  I've tried the 10 second timer and it was a bit too long.

And an air pump to inflate the bass before taking pics. ? Good goobly goop.... what a spectacular specimen of a smalljaws that is. I don't often envy others, but brother you and @Dwight Hottle  turn me a light shade of green every now and then. Y'all are big brown bass hammers.

I usually just take a photo of it laying on the measuring board if I’m by myself. I’ve tried the timer thing with limited success. I don’t do selfies.

 

I think @Jar11591 has a stand for his phone that works pretty well but I am pretty sure he’s still in Iceland.

Go to video and take a short video of it. Screenshot the ones you like from the video

I don’t care about me in the picture. Phone in right hand, fish in left. I’ve found a reverse grip with the head side of the fish towards my wrist instead of away from my wrist.  Then I’m not breaking their jaw to get the right angle.

Usually I just take a picture of the fish while I'm holding it up. I'll do a selfie as well. 

 

I do like what @A-Jay does with the GoPro. Might have to invest in an offbrand one. My daughter wants to make little fishing videos anyway.

Was gonna suggest what A-Jay said with the gopro, that's never really a bad choice. If using a boat, you could also get a arm clamp/phone holster too, and avoid having to use a second device - pictured below. What's nice about that is you can get them for cheap and lots of different styles. For being on foot I would get a selfie stick or a tripod. I'm bad about remembering stuff and I'm decent at straight arming so I don't have any tools for this

When I needed to take a pic by myself I used a simple tripod with my phone & a Bluetooth shutter. Look in my right hand & it’s visible in my palm. The little hand held shutter gives you plenty of time to take the pic after checking the focus.

i too use a goPRO on video mode and simply save the exact moment that i feel i am the most handsome and the fish is looking decent as well :D.    i took a simple carpenter spring-clamp and 3M double sided taped it to a gopro mounting plate.  i then clamp the camera that was on my chesty to my fishing net and rest it against my pedal drive.  BOOM!

 

for the record, 100% of my friends are the most krappy photographers on the planet.

My Galaxy is on a RAM mount at front of my boat...when I catch a nice fish, I turn on the camera...step back a little...and say "Cheeeeeese"

 

The camera delays ~5 seconds, then snaps a picture. 

 

Works for me...

The IFGA would probably be glad to follow @A-Jay & @Dwight Hottle around to take pictures for them. I'm sure there's a musky group out there that would do the same for you @T-Billy.

Yep still in Iceland. If there were bass here I might be sticking around long term.

I usually just long arm the fish.  I get it back the bass back in the water faster, and there is less chance of someone seeing me with the fish.
