bp_fowler Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 Today I went to a small man made lake to fish and noticed at two separate locations that the bass were in groups of 3-4 fish moving through the shallows. I’ve seen this before but it was earlier during the pre-spawn and to a lesser degree the spawn. I haven’t seen it since then. I’ll admit I’m no expert but I’ve never heard of bass doing this in the late summer. Am I missing something or is this a common occurrence this time of year? 2 Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted August 1, 2023 Super User Posted August 1, 2023 I commonly see small schools of smaller male bass hunting up shallow. Kind of like a wolf pack. It’s definitely more of an early summer thing around here but I’ve seen these wolf packs all times of the year. Usually they’re easily caught. 7 Quote

I saw similar behavior when going up into a creek that feeds into the lake I fish. We were going up one side of it, and then saw 3 bass dash out from the cover and move to the other side to a shady spot. I tossed out my lure and caught one of them. Not sure if this is regular behavior this time of year, but I saw almost the same thing you did. This was up in shallow water about 3-4 feet deep. 1 Quote
Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted August 1, 2023 Super User Posted August 1, 2023 Very common, fish usually group up in similar size ranges and wolf pack roam around for forage. 4 Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted August 1, 2023 Super User Posted August 1, 2023 Fairly common. I see bigger groups at other times of the year, but nearly always see some shallow, though that behavior is more prevalent in certain bodies of water than others. Here’s a shot I took last fall. You can see at least 10 bass in this group that were just running the banks. 6 1 Quote
bp_fowler Posted August 1, 2023 Author Posted August 1, 2023 Well learned something new today. I never knew that this happened outside of the springtime. Thank you all who responded. 3 Quote
