Wacky, drop shot, and neko hooks. all fall under the same category?

In terms of overall shape, they all seem pretty similar to me. And I think I've seen that people will use

Anyway, I think I've seen that people will use have used them interchangeably and they all seem to have a similar shape to me. Do you think they fall under the same umbrella?

Yes, you could theoretically use the same neko hook for all three.  I use a VMC Neko hook for wacky and neko rigging.  The only difference is that the neko uses a nail weight in the stick bait.

 

Can't help ya on drop shotting anymore.  I'm done with it.

I have two hook types for my drop-shotting...Neko and Off-Set worm hook.

I would say that Neko and Wacky use the same Neko type hook interchangeably.   Drop shot can use that hook, but there seems to be so many more options for drop shot.  Spin shot with built in swivel, finesse wide gap, Aberdeen long shape type hooks.  There are a lot of bait options for drop shotting so that is probably why.

My wacky and drop shot are the same hook...but finest hook I've used for either.

There are hooks that can do all 3 pretty well, it just depends on personal preference.  Really there isn't much of a difference between a neko and wacky rig, one just has weight in it and the hook is always parallel to the bait on a neko.  Personally I like the longer shank hooks for neko/wacky rigs and shorter shanks for nose rigging DS baits.  I have used neko hooks for DSing with good results in the past.  I dont think the action is as good when you thread a DS bait on a neko, but if they hit it the fish is pretty caught.

Not really, it comes down to wire diameter and shank length.

The basic shape comes from the short shank Sealy octopus hook made in England a century ago.

Wacky and nose hooked soft plastic use the shorter shank light wire strong hooks. Weedless (Texas) rigging a soft plastic the longer shank or more traditional bass worm hooks are preferred.

Where the differ is in the hook bend designs. O’Shaughnessey bend is stronger the a round bend for example, however the round bend accommodated more soft plastic of equal hook size. The factor for lighter weight hooks is strength and generally a forged (slightly flattened bend) strengthens the wire and heat treatment of high strength steel make a big difference.

I use 3 different hooks for Drop Shot, Slip Shot and Wacky rigs. Neko is a Wacky rig with a nail weight.

1. Drop Shot nose hooked, Gamakatsu or Owner mosquito hook.

2. Weedless (Texas) hooked #5133 Owner Down Shot hook.

3. Weedless Wacky hooked #4107 Owner Jungle Wacky Hook.
