Super User NYWayfarer Posted July 29, 2023 Super User Posted July 29, 2023 I took my new setup to the river this morning to see what I could catch. Shimano Curado BFS XG spooled with 8# Stren and mounted on a 6’,8” Powell Max 682C medium ex-fast action rod. I tried a weightless 4” watermelon Senko on a 2/0 worm hook. I set the brakes to 3 and was able to get some nice distance on my casts. First fish was a Pickerel Next was a dink Smallmouth Bass. Then a solid 2# Smallmouth slammed my bait. A nice fight to land it which highlighted the clicking drag on this reel. I tied on a beetle spin next and caught about half a dozen Smallies under a pound. I had a blast with the new BFS reel. It performed as good as I hoped with lighter lures I usually throw on a spinning reel. Can’t wait to get it out on the water again. 11 Quote
Junger Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 I love the clicking drag. If you want to go ever lighter lures, get the Roro spool for it. 2 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted August 1, 2023 Author Super User Posted August 1, 2023 My new ultralight casting rod arrived in the mail today. The Goture Fire Phoenix. For the reels next test I switched to 6# mono and tied on a 1/8oz Panther Martin in-line spinner. Can’t wait to try this out. 4 Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted August 1, 2023 Super User Posted August 1, 2023 Y'all BFS guys are gonna keep on until you push me over the edge. ? 1 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 1, 2023 Super User Posted August 1, 2023 Casting reels spool adjustment knob simply adds or subtracts pressure in the spool end shaft. When there is clearance zero pressure is applied. You don’t need to add more clearance! Paper is about .004 clearance = zero spool shaft force.....no need to add ant more! Tom 3 Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted August 1, 2023 Super User Posted August 1, 2023 @WRB is correct - you want incipient side play. Adjust spool tension to side play, and dial it in to where side play just disappears. I know it's off topic, but you can mess up your Daiwa SV brake with excessive side play - the spool can slide toward the reel handle side during cast, and you won't have enough inductor mass in the mag field to work. 3 1 Quote
GetFishorDieTryin Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 Thought about some financial fudging to get into BFS for this winters grind. Kestrel and Phenix BFS are looking strong. 1 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted August 1, 2023 Author Super User Posted August 1, 2023 1/8 oz in-line spinner test was a success. 4 Fish during my lunchtime fishing session today. The ultralight casting rod performed better than expected for $18 3 Quote
